Word Meanings:
- Talaqqawnahu (تَلَقَّوْنَهُ): You receive it and pass it on from one another.

- Adheem (عَظِيمٌ): Enormous, grave, and severely punishable.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses a moment in time when the believers—specifically those who engaged in the slanderous incident against the Mother of the Believers, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her)—were spreading the false accusation. They received the lie from the fabricators and repeated it among themselves, each person passing it along without verifying its truth. They spoke with their mouths words that carried no knowledge or certainty, merely echoing what others had said. This is a profound lesson: the tongue uttered what the heart did not believe, and the mind did not confirm, making it a hollow and reckless speech.
The verse then highlights a grave misconception: they assumed this act—engaging in gossip, spreading slander, and defaming an innocent person—was a small, insignificant matter. They treated it lightly, as if it were harmless chatter. But in the sight of Allah, this was an immense sin, carrying a heavy burden of wrongdoing. Its magnitude lies in the combination of falsehood, the violation of an innocent person’s honor, and the audacity to speak about something without knowledge—all of which are among the most detestable acts to Allah.
This verse serves as a powerful and timeless admonition for every believer. It warns against the ease with which we may fall into spreading rumors, sharing unverified news, or engaging in backbiting, thinking it is trivial. Allah reminds us that what may seem small to us can be colossal in His scale of justice. The tongue is a gift, but it can also be a source of ruin. How often do we repeat words without checking their truth? How often do we underestimate the harm of a single sentence?
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, let this verse be a mirror for your daily conduct. In an age of rapid communication, where news spreads in seconds, the lesson here is more urgent than ever. Before you speak, ask yourself: Do I have certain knowledge of this? Is it true? Will it harm someone? If you cannot affirm these, then silence is your safeguard. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." This is not merely advice—it is a path to Allah’s love and protection.
Moreover, this verse invites you to appreciate the sanctity of honor and justice in Islam. The religion you follow is not one of negligence; it is one of precision and accountability. Every word you utter is recorded, and every action you take is weighed. When you protect the reputation of others, Allah protects you. When you refrain from falsehood, Allah elevates your rank. So turn to your Lord with repentance, seek His forgiveness for past slips of the tongue, and resolve to be a person whose speech is a source of goodness, not harm. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful to those who return to Him sincerely.
