Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Marad (مَرَض): A sickness or disease—here referring to the spiritual sickness of hypocrisy (nifāq) and deviation in the heart.
- Irtābū (ارْتَابُوا): They doubted or harbored suspicion—specifically, doubt regarding the truth of the Prophet’s message.
- Yaḥīfa (يَحِيفَ): To act unjustly, to incline away from fairness, or to be biased in judgment.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses a profound and searching question posed to those who turned away from the judgment of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. It exposes the true motives hidden within their hearts, stripping away every excuse they might offer. Allah asks: Is the reason for their avoidance of the Prophet’s judgment due to a sickness in their hearts—the sickness of hypocrisy and insincerity? Or do they doubt that Muhammad ﷺ is truly the Messenger of Allah? Or do they fear that Allah and His Messenger would be unjust toward them in their rulings?
Each of these possibilities is raised not as a genuine question, but as a form of rebuke and exposure. Allah then answers decisively: No—none of these is the real reason. They do not fear injustice from Allah or His Messenger, for Allah’s justice is absolute and His Messenger ﷺ ruled with perfect fairness. Rather, the true cause is that they are the wrongdoers themselves. Their hearts are filled with arrogance, their desires have overcome their reason, and they refuse to submit to the truth because it conflicts with their personal interests and worldly ambitions. They are the oppressors—oppressing their own souls by rejecting what they know to be right, and oppressing the cause of justice by turning away from the divine standard.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the beauty of this divine inquiry. Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not condemn His servants without first laying out every possible excuse and then dismantling it with clarity. This verse teaches us that the door to truth is always open, but it requires a sincere heart—one free from the diseases of pride, envy, and stubbornness. When we submit to Allah’s judgment and the guidance of His Messenger ﷺ, we find peace, justice, and liberation from the tyranny of our own desires. Let this verse inspire you to purify your heart, to welcome the truth wherever it leads, and to trust in the perfect justice of Allah, who never wrongs anyone even by a speck of dust. The one who surrenders to Allah gains everything; the one who turns away loses even himself. Choose the path of light, and let your heart find rest in the remembrance and obedience of its Creator.
