Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Hijran mahjoora (حِجْرًا مَّحْجُورًا): A phrase meaning "a forbidden prohibition" or "absolutely forbidden." It conveys the idea of something being made completely unlawful and inaccessible.
Tafsir (Explanation):
On the Day when the disbelievers and criminals see the angels—whether at the moment of death, in the grave (barzakh), upon resurrection, or when they are being dragged toward the Reckoning and the Fire—there will be no glad tidings for them on that day. Unlike the believers, who are greeted by the angels with words of peace, joy, and the promise of Paradise, the criminals will face the angels as bearers of grim news. The angels will say to them: "Hijran mahjoora"—meaning, "Paradise is absolutely forbidden to you; it is made entirely unlawful for you to enter." This is a stark contrast to the believers, for whom the angels bring glad tidings of eternal bliss. The criminals, who in this world denied the angels and mocked the message of the prophets, will now see them in a terrifying form, and instead of hope, they will receive only despair and the certainty of their doom.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a profound reminder of the mercy of Allah and the importance of heeding His call in this life. The angels are created beings who carry out Allah's commands with perfect obedience—they bring glad tidings to the righteous and warnings to the wicked. For the believer, the sight of the angels at death is a moment of tranquility and hope, as they come to escort the soul to its Lord with peace. But for the one who persists in sin and disbelief, that same sight becomes a source of terror and regret. How beautiful it is to be among those whom the angels greet with the words: "Peace be upon you; enter Paradise for what you used to do" (Qur'an 16:32). Let this verse inspire you to turn to Allah sincerely, to purify your heart, and to live a life that earns the glad tidings of the angels. For the door of repentance is open until the moment of death—so do not delay, and let not the whispers of Shaytan keep you from the mercy of your Lord. Indeed, Allah's mercy encompasses all things, and He loves those who return to Him with a sincere heart.
