Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ظَهِيرًا (Zaheeran): An aider, supporter, or assistant — one who backs another in a cause.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After presenting the overwhelming signs of Allah's power, mercy, and provision — from the alternation of night and day, to the sending of winds and rain, to the creation of the heavens and earth — Allah now exposes the sheer folly of the disbelievers' choice. Despite all these clear proofs, they still turn away from their Creator and worship things that are utterly powerless. They bow down to idols, stones, and false deities that possess no benefit to give them if they worship them, and no harm to inflict upon them if they abandon them. These objects are completely neutral — they cannot hear a prayer, answer a call, grant a need, or avert a calamity. Yet the disbelievers cling to them with stubborn devotion.
This is the height of irrationality: to leave the worship of the One who created you, sustains you, and controls your every breath, and instead prostrate before lifeless creations that cannot even protect themselves from dust or decay. The One who sends down rain from the sky and brings forth fruits for your sustenance — you ignore Him. And the stone that can neither move nor speak — you worship it. What greater loss could there be?
Then Allah reveals the deeper reality behind this misguided worship: "And the disbeliever is ever an aider against his Lord." The word *zaheer* means one who lends support and assistance. The disbeliever, by his shirk and rebellion, becomes a helper to Satan — aiding the enemy of Allah in the mission of disobedience and corruption. Every act of worship directed to false gods is not merely a personal error; it is a reinforcement of the devil's army against the cause of truth. The disbeliever unknowingly fights on the side of the accursed one, strengthening the forces of misguidance against the Lord of the worlds.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and consider: why would any sane person abandon the One who owns everything — your health, your wealth, your family, your very soul — and turn to that which owns nothing, not even itself? The idols of this world are not only stones and statues; they are also wealth, status, desires, and fleeting pleasures that people worship today. They promise much but deliver nothing. They cannot benefit you in your moment of need, nor can they protect you from a single harm. Only Allah — the Living, the Self-Sustaining — holds all benefit and all harm in His Hands.
The Qur'an invites you to break free from this cycle of futility. It calls you to stand on the side of your Lord, not against Him. Every prayer you offer to Allah, every act of obedience you perform, every sin you abandon — these are not just personal victories; they are blows against the army of Satan and steps toward the eternal success that awaits the believers. Choose your side wisely, for the battle is real, and the outcome is forever.
