Word Meanings:

  • Āyah (آيَةً): A sign, a lesson, a clear evidence or proof that points to the truth.
  • Aktharuhum (أَكْثَرُهُم): The majority of them — referring to the people of Shuʿayb (peace be upon him) who were addressed by this warning.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) concludes the story of Prophet Shuʿayb (peace be upon him) and his people — the people of Madyan — with a profound and timeless lesson. He says: "Indeed, in that [which has been mentioned] is a sign, but most of them were not believers."

The "sign" refers to the punishment that befell the people of Madyan after they rejected Shuʿayb's message, persisted in their wrongdoing — cheating in weights and measures, spreading corruption in the land — and defiantly refused to believe. When the punishment of the Day of the Shadow (the torment of the cloud) overtook them, they were destroyed utterly. This event stands as a clear, undeniable proof of Allah's power and justice: He is fully capable of seizing those who deny His messengers and reject His signs.

Yet, despite the clarity of this sign and the many similar signs throughout history, the majority of those people did not believe. Their hearts were sealed by arrogance and stubbornness; they saw the truth but turned away from it, and they witnessed the consequences of disbelief yet failed to take heed.

This verse also carries a universal message for all who read it: the purpose of these stories is not mere entertainment, but reflection and guidance. Every destruction of a past nation is a sign for those who come after them — a reminder that Allah's promise is true, His punishment is real, and His mercy is for those who believe and do righteous deeds.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

How beautiful and merciful is our Lord that He repeats this phrase throughout the Qur'an — "Indeed, in that is a sign, but most of them were not believers" — not to despair us, but to awaken us. It tells us that faith is a gift and a choice: the door of repentance is always open, and the heart that seeks truth will always find it. The Qur'an calls us to be among the few who believe, who reflect, and who act — for the believers are the ones who truly succeed in this life and the next. Let this verse inspire you to examine your own heart: Are you among those who take the signs of Allah seriously? Are you among those who respond to His call with sincerity and submission? The choice is yours, and the reward is immense.

📜 Verse 188-192 — Ash-Shu'ara

And they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the black cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a terrible day.
190إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
192وَإِنَّهُ لَتَنزِيلُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
And indeed, the Qur'an is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds.
