Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-'Aziz (العزيز): The Almighty, the All-Powerful, the One who prevails over all things and is never overcome.
- Ar-Rahim (الرحيم): The Most Merciful, the One who showers His mercy upon His believing servants.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger, know with certainty that your Lord — He alone — is the Almighty, the All-Powerful, who exacts His vengeance upon His enemies and punishes the wrongdoers with a punishment they cannot escape. His might is absolute, and no one can thwart His will or resist His decree. At the same time, He is the Most Merciful to His believing servants — those who turn to Him in repentance, worship Him sincerely, and follow His messengers. His mercy encompasses them in this life and the Hereafter, shielding them from His wrath and granting them His boundless grace.
This verse comes as the concluding refrain of the seven stories of the prophets mentioned in this chapter — the stories of Moses, Abraham, Noah, Hud, Salih, Lot, and Shu'ayb (peace be upon them all). It serves as a source of comfort and consolation to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), reassuring him that just as Allah supported His previous messengers and destroyed their disbelieving nations, He will likewise grant victory to His final Messenger and deal justly with those who reject him. The repetition of this phrase throughout these narratives is a deliberate emphasis — a powerful reminder that the same Almighty and Merciful Lord who acted in history is acting today, and His promise remains true.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, let this verse fill your heart with hope and awe. Your Lord is not weak, nor is He indifferent to the affairs of His creation. He is Al-'Aziz — His power knows no limits, and His justice is certain. No tyrant, no oppressor, no enemy of truth will escape His grasp. And He is Ar-Rahim — His mercy is vast, open to all who sincerely turn to Him, no matter how great their sins may be. This is the beauty of Islam: a religion that balances fear of Allah's majesty with hope in His mercy. So do not despair of His mercy, and do not be arrogant in your sins. Return to Him, and you will find that the Almighty is also the Most Merciful — ready to forgive, eager to bless, and faithful to His promise of victory for His righteous servants.
