Word Meanings:
- مُنظَرُون (munzaroon): Given respite, delayed, or granted more time.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes the moment when the punishment of Allah descends upon the disbelievers suddenly, catching them completely off guard. They had been warned repeatedly by the prophets, yet they persisted in denial and mockery, demanding that the punishment they were promised be brought forth immediately. But when it arrives—unexpectedly, like a thief in the night—they are seized with overwhelming regret and desperation.
At that terrifying moment, they cry out in anguish: "Are we to be given any respite?" They plead for even a moment's delay, hoping to turn back, to repent, to believe, and to undo the years of rejection and arrogance. But it is far too late. The door of repentance has been shut, and the opportunity for faith has passed. Their plea is met with silence, for the decree of Allah has already been fulfilled.
This verse serves as a profound reminder of the nature of divine justice and the futility of delayed repentance. The disbelievers are not asking for more time to reflect or to seek the truth—they are asking for a second chance after witnessing the undeniable reality of the punishment with their own eyes. This is not sincere faith; it is the desperation of a soul confronted with its own destruction.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a wake-up call for every soul. It reminds us that the mercy of Allah is vast and ever-present *now*, in this very moment, but it is not guaranteed for tomorrow. The Qur'an repeatedly urges us not to delay our return to Allah, for we do not know when our last breath will come. Why wait for the storm to strike before seeking shelter? Why wait for the darkness of the grave before longing for light?
The beauty of Islam is that it opens the door of repentance at every moment of our lives, until the very last breath. Allah calls out to His servants: "Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins." (Az-Zumar 39:53). This is an invitation of love and compassion—an invitation that the disbelievers in this verse would have given anything to receive again.
So seize this moment. Turn to your Lord with a sincere heart, before the day comes when you will cry out, "Are we to be given any respite?"—and receive no answer. Let this verse inspire you to be among those who respond to Allah's call today, not tomorrow, and to taste the sweetness of faith before the inevitable meeting with your Creator.
