Surah Ash-Shu'ara — Verse 224

In this noble verse, Allah Almighty addresses a claim made by the disbelievers of Makkah, who alleged that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was merely a poet, and that the Qur'an was nothing but poetry. Allah refutes this false accusation by describing the true nature of poets and their followers.

Allah says that the poets — those who compose verses of falsehood, exaggeration, and corruption — are followed by the misguided and deviant people, those who have strayed from the path of guidance and righteousness. These followers are like-minded individuals who delight in falsehood, spread corruption, and take pleasure in slander and mockery.

The poets described here are those who wander aimlessly in every valley of deceit and false speech. They praise those who deserve blame and criticize those who deserve honor. They say things they do not do, exaggerating in their praise of falsehood and diminishing the worth of truth. Their poetry is built upon lies and vanity, and their followers are equally lost — people who enjoy hearing such falsehood and propagate it further.

The context of this verse is significant: some disbelievers used to compose poetry attacking the Prophet and the Muslims, claiming that what Muhammad brought was similar to their own words. Allah clarifies that the followers of such poets are the misguided ones, not the followers of the Prophet. The Prophet was not a poet; he was a Messenger of Allah, and those who followed him were guided and righteous people.
