Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Rabbu-kum" — Your Lord, the One who created you, sustains you, and governs your affairs.
- "Wa Rabbu aba'i-kum al-awwalin" — And the Lord of your forefathers of old, those who came before you in bygone generations.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) continues his dialogue with Pharaoh and his court, responding to Pharaoh's earlier accusation that Musa was bringing a message contrary to what Pharaoh himself claimed — namely, that Pharaoh was their supreme lord. Musa, with profound wisdom and clarity, declares: "Your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of old."
This statement is a powerful reminder that the true Lord is not a tyrant king sitting on a throne claiming divinity, nor a magician, nor a created being. Rather, He is the One who brought you into existence from nothing, who nurtured you through the stages of life, and who also created and sustained your ancestors who have long passed away. He is the Eternal Lord of all generations — past, present, and future.
Musa's words strike at the very heart of Pharaoh's false claim. If Pharaoh were truly a god, how could he be a mortal man who was once a child in his mother's womb, who would one day die like his forefathers? The true God is the One who never dies, who never changes, and who has always been the Lord of all creation — from the first human being to the last.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: our connection to Allah is not merely a personal or contemporary matter. It is a continuous thread that runs through all of human history. The same Lord who guided Adam, Nuh, Ibrahim, and all the prophets is the very same Lord who guides us today. Our faith is not an innovation; it is the timeless truth that has been proclaimed by every messenger.
When Pharaoh heard this clear and irrefutable argument, he had no logical response. Instead of acknowledging the truth, he resorted to mockery and false accusations — claiming that Musa must be mad. This is the way of tyrants throughout history: when they cannot defeat the truth with reason, they try to silence it with slander and force.
Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this statement. Musa did not merely say "Your Lord" — he said "Your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers." This teaches us that when we call people to Islam, we should connect them to their own heritage and history. Every human being, regardless of their background, descends from a lineage that was created by Allah. The call to Tawhid (monotheism) is not alien to human nature — it is the original fitrah (natural disposition) upon which every soul was created.
The message of Islam is not a new religion invented by Muhammad (peace be upon him); it is the same message brought by all the prophets, from Adam to Noah, from Abraham to Moses, from Jesus to Muhammad (peace be upon them all). When you embrace Islam, you are not abandoning your ancestors — you are returning to the faith of your true spiritual forefathers, the prophets of Allah.
And know that the Lord who created you and your forefathers is still alive, still hearing your prayers, still providing for you, and still waiting for you to turn to Him. He has not abandoned you, so do not abandon Him. Come to the worship of the One True God, and you will find peace that no earthly power can give you.
