Word Meanings:
- Kallā (كَلَّا): An emphatic negation, meaning "No, absolutely not!" It rejects the fear and despair that had gripped the people.
- Inna ma'iya rabbī (إِنَّ مَعِيَ رَبِّي): "Indeed, my Lord is with me" — signifying divine presence, support, and protection.
- Sayahdīni (سَيَهْدِينِ): "He will guide me" — referring to guidance toward the path of safety and salvation.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the sea lay before them and Pharaoh's army thundered behind them, the companions of Moses cried out in terror: "Indeed, we are overtaken!" Their hearts sank, and despair began to creep into their souls. But Moses — peace be upon him — stood firm, his heart anchored in the certainty of Allah's promise. He replied with words that echo through time as a beacon of unwavering trust: "No, absolutely not! Indeed, my Lord is with me; He will guide me."
Moses was not speaking from blind optimism or wishful thinking. He was speaking from deep, unshakable faith. He knew that Allah had promised him deliverance, and he knew that the promise of Allah is true. He rejected the panic of his people with a firm "Kallā" — a decisive refusal of fear itself. Then he declared the source of his confidence: "My Lord is with me." This was not merely a statement of presence; it was a declaration of divine companionship, protection, and aid. And with that, he affirmed that Allah would guide him — not just to safety, but to the very path that would lead to the salvation of his entire nation.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: when the world closes in on us, when the waves of hardship rise and the armies of difficulty pursue us, the believer does not look at the size of the problem but at the greatness of Allah. Moses did not count the soldiers of Pharaoh; he counted on the power of his Lord. He did not measure the depth of the sea; he measured the depth of Allah's mercy and wisdom.
A Call to Faith and Reflection:
Dear reader, how often do we find ourselves in situations where we feel trapped between an impossible challenge and an overwhelming fear? This verse is a divine prescription for such moments. It invites you to replace "I am doomed" with "My Lord is with me." It calls you to trade anxiety for certainty, and panic for patience. When you place your trust in Allah, He becomes your guide through the darkest valleys and the most turbulent seas. He will open doors you never imagined and clear paths you never saw.
This is the beauty of Islam: it teaches us that no matter how dire the circumstances, Allah's help is nearer than our own breath. Moses was at the edge of the sea, with no ship and no bridge — yet he knew that the Creator of the sea would make a way. And indeed, Allah split the sea for him. So trust in Allah, hold firm to His rope, and know that He who guided Moses through the sea will guide you through every trial of your life.
