Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • تَرَاءَى: Each group saw the other clearly with their own eyes.
  • الْجَمْعَانِ: The two gatherings — the followers of Moses and the army of Pharaoh.
  • لَمُدْرَكُونَ: We will certainly be overtaken and caught.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the two hosts came within sight of one another — the oppressed believers fleeing for their lives, and the mighty army of Pharaoh thundering behind them in pursuit — the moment of confrontation had arrived. The sea lay ahead, vast and impassable, while the enemy closed in from behind. At that critical juncture, the companions of Moses, seeing the sheer might of Pharaoh's forces and feeling their own weakness, cried out in fear: "We are surely going to be caught and destroyed! There is no escape, and we have no power against them."

Their fear was natural — they were a small group of unarmed fugitives facing the most powerful army of their time. Yet this moment of despair was precisely when divine help was about to descend. The believers' eyes saw only the overwhelming odds, but Allah's plan was far greater than what their limited vision could perceive.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson: when trials intensify and the enemy seems invincible, we must remember that Allah's help comes at the darkest hour. The companions of Moses did not yet know what their Prophet knew — that Allah had already commanded the sea to part for them. Their fear was human, but their faith in Moses kept them following him even in that terrifying moment.

Dear believer, when you face your own "sea" — an impossible situation, a mountain of debt, an illness, or an enemy — do not let despair overtake you. The same Allah who split the sea for His servants is alive and capable of making a way out for you from where you cannot even imagine. Keep walking forward with trust in Him, for the relief of Allah is closer than the blink of an eye. The story of Moses and his people is not just history — it is a living promise that no matter how tight the circle of hardship becomes, the believer's ultimate victory is guaranteed by the One who controls all affairs.

📜 Verse 59-63 — Ash-Shu'ara

59كَذَٰلِكَ وَأَوْرَثْنَاهَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ
Thus. And We caused to inherit it the Children of Israel.
60فَأَتْبَعُوهُم مُّشْرِقِينَ
So they pursued them at sunrise.
61فَلَمَّا تَرَاءَى الْجَمْعَانِ قَالَ أَصْحَابُ مُوسَىٰ إِنَّا لَمُدْرَكُونَ
And when the two companies saw one another, the companions of Moses said, "Indeed, we are to be overtaken!"
62قَالَ كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّ مَعِيَ رَبِّي سَيَهْدِينِ
[Moses] said, "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me."
Then We inspired to Moses, "Strike with your staff the sea," and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain.
