Word Meanings:

  • Shahwah (شَهْوَةً): Lustful desire, craving for sexual gratification.
  • Min doon al-nisa (مِن دُونِ النِّسَاءِ): Instead of women, or apart from women.
  • Tajhaloon (تَجْهَلُونَ): You are ignorant, lacking wisdom and understanding of what is right.

Explanation of the Verse:

Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) addressed his people with a question that was both a rebuke and an appeal to their reason: "Do you truly approach men with lustful desire instead of women?" This was not a question seeking information—they knew exactly what they were doing—but rather a rhetorical condemnation meant to shake them from their arrogance and make them reflect on the enormity of their sin.

The verse highlights two profound errors in their behavior. First, they had completely inverted the natural order that Allah established for human beings. They abandoned the lawful and pure path of marriage with women—which brings about family, love, mercy, and the continuation of humanity—and instead turned to men solely to satisfy their base, animalistic desires. There was no purpose of procreation, no seeking of a lawful bond, no intention of chastity; it was purely the pursuit of lust, like beasts driven by instinct.

Second, the verse declares: "Rather, you are a people who are ignorant." This ignorance was not a lack of knowledge in the general sense—they were intelligent enough to run their cities and trade—but rather a profound ignorance of their Lord, of His rights over them, of the purpose of their creation, and of the consequences of their actions. They were ignorant of the purity that faith demands, of the sanctity of the human body, and of the severe punishment that awaited them for this unprecedented crime—a sin that no nation before them had ever committed.

This verse serves as a timeless reminder for all of humanity. It teaches us that desires are not to be followed blindly, but rather guided by the divine law that protects human dignity, preserves family structures, and ensures the moral health of society. When people abandon Allah's guidance and follow their whims, they sink into corruption—not only sexually, but in every aspect of life. The story of Lot's people is not merely history; it is a warning that any society that normalizes such behavior and mocks the boundaries set by Allah is heading toward destruction.

Dear reader, reflect on this: Allah created us with noble purposes and gave us desires as a test, not as a license. The one who controls their desires for the sake of Allah is elevated to the highest ranks, while the one who surrenders to them falls to the lowest depths. Let the example of Lot's people be a lesson—and let the mercy of Allah, which is vast and ever-present, be your motivation to turn back to Him, for He accepts the repentance of those who sincerely seek His forgiveness.

📜 Verse 53-57 — An-Naml

And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allah.
And [mention] Lot, when he said to his people, "Do you commit immorality while you are seeing?
Do you indeed approach men with desire instead of women? Rather, you are a people behaving ignorantly."
But the answer of his people was not except that they said, "Expel the family of Lot from your city. Indeed, they are people who keep themselves pure."
So We saved him and his family, except for his wife; We destined her to be of those who remained behind.
