Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Fāḥishah (الْفَاحِشَةَ): The abominable act, meaning an indecency that is extreme in its wickedness and exceeds all bounds of moral depravity. In this context, it refers specifically to the act of sodomy (homosexual intercourse).
- Tubṣirūn (تُبْصِرُونَ): You see/you perceive — meaning you are fully aware and conscious of what you are doing, having clear vision and understanding of its evil nature.
Explanation of the Verse:
And remember, O Prophet, the story of Prophet Lūṭ (Lot) — peace be upon him — when he addressed his people with stern reproach and heartfelt condemnation, saying: "Do you commit this abominable act — the like of which no creation before you has ever committed — while you see and know full well its wickedness?"
His question was not one of genuine inquiry, but rather a rhetorical rebuke meant to shake their consciences and awaken their dormant sense of right and wrong. He was astonished that a people endowed with intellect, sight, and the ability to distinguish good from evil would still persist in such a monstrous deed. They committed this vile act openly in their gatherings, seeing one another, without any sense of shame or fear of Allah. Their hearts perceived the truth — that this was a grave sin and a violation of the natural order Allah had established — yet they chose to proceed anyway, driven by base desires and corrupted inclinations.
The Prophet Lūṭ was not merely informing them of something unknown; he was confronting them with a truth they already knew deep within themselves. This is why his words carry such weight — he appeals to their innate awareness, their God-given fitrah (natural disposition), which testifies to the ugliness of their actions.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for all of humanity. It reminds us that Allah has placed within every human being a natural compass — a fitrah — that instinctively recognizes right from wrong, purity from corruption. When we violate this inner guidance, we do so with full knowledge, and that makes the sin even graver.
How beautiful is the path of righteousness that Allah has laid before us! He has created us in the best of forms, with noble purposes, and has sent His messengers to guide us toward that which purifies our souls and elevates our ranks. The story of Lūṭ is not merely history — it is a living call to every generation to uphold chastity, honor the sacred bonds of marriage, and protect the family structure that is the cornerstone of every healthy society.
Islam offers humanity a complete way of life that safeguards dignity, preserves lineage, and nurtures the soul. By following the guidance of the Qur'an and the noble example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, we find true peace, contentment, and the pleasure of our Lord. Let us heed the call of the messengers, embrace the purity Allah loves, and distance ourselves from all that He has forbidden — for in His obedience lies our ultimate success in this life and the Hereafter.
