Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "آلَ لُوطٍ" (Aal Lut): The family and followers of Prophet Lut (peace be upon him), including his believing household and those who adhered to his call.
- "يَتَطَهَّرُونَ" (yatatahharun): They purify themselves; meaning they abstain from filth and abominable acts, specifically the heinous sin of homosexuality, and they keep themselves clean from all impurities—both physical and moral.
Explanation of the Verse:
When Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) delivered his message and warned his people against their vile practices, calling them to abandon their wickedness and return to purity and righteousness, his people did not respond with reasoned debate or sincere reflection. Instead, their only answer was a collective, arrogant outcry: "Drive out the family of Lut from your town!" They demanded his expulsion simply because he and his followers refused to participate in their depravity.
Their words carried a tone of mockery and scorn: "Indeed, they are people who keep themselves pure." They said this as an insult, ridiculing the believers for their chastity and moral cleanliness. To them, purity was a flaw, and righteousness was a crime worthy of exile. They could not tolerate the presence of those who reminded them of their sins and stood as a living rebuke to their corruption. So they chose to banish the truth rather than embrace it—a tragic pattern seen throughout history when arrogant nations reject the messengers sent to guide them.
This verse highlights the deep moral inversion of Lut's people: they considered the pure to be impure, and the impure to be acceptable. Their expulsion of the righteous from their midst sealed their fate, as they rejected the very mercy that was extended to them through the prophet sent to save them.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
How striking is this scene! A people so lost in their desires that they mock those who uphold decency and virtue. Yet, this is a timeless lesson for us all: never let the majority's corruption make you ashamed of your own purity. The believers in Lut's household were few, but they stood firm, and Allah honored them with salvation while the mockers were destroyed.
Dear reader, when you uphold the teachings of Islam—when you guard your chastity, your prayers, and your character—some may ridicule you, just as Lut's people ridiculed the pure. But know that Allah is with those who purify themselves. He loves those who turn to Him in repentance and remain steadfast upon His path. Do not let the laughter of the ignorant shake your resolve, for the end of the righteous is honor in this life and the next, while the end of the mockers is regret and ruin.
Let this verse inspire you to be among those who "purify themselves"—not only from physical impurities but from every sin and every act that displeases Allah. And if the world turns against you for your faith, remember that Allah's support is greater than any human rejection. The family of Lut was expelled from their town, but Allah granted them safety and elevated their mention. Such is the promise of Allah to His righteous servants: after hardship comes ease, and after exile comes honor in the company of the prophets and the truthful.
