Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Wa'd (الوعد): The promise or threat of punishment that has been communicated to them.
  • Sādiqīn (صادقين): Truthful ones; those who speak the truth in what they claim.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The disbelievers among your people, O Messenger, who deny the Resurrection and the Day of Judgment, say in mockery and defiance: "When will this promise of punishment that you and your followers warn us about actually come to pass—if you are truly truthful in what you claim?" They ask this not out of genuine inquiry, but as a challenge and a taunt, seeking to cast doubt on the truthfulness of the Prophet and the believers. Their question stems from arrogance and a hardened heart, as they refuse to accept the reality of the Hereafter and the consequences of their disbelief.

This verse highlights a recurring pattern of the disbelievers throughout history: they demand immediate proof of a promise that is bound to a time known only to Allah. They fail to realize that the punishment they mock is inevitable, and that Allah’s timing is precise and just. The Qur'an repeatedly addresses such skepticism by reminding humanity that the Hereafter is certain, and that no one can hasten or delay what Allah has decreed.

A Da'wah Perspective:

This verse serves as a profound reminder for us as believers to remain steadfast in our faith, even when others mock or question the promises of Allah. The disbelievers’ question is not a sincere search for truth, but a reflection of their unwillingness to submit to Allah’s plan. For us, it is a call to strengthen our conviction: the promise of Allah is true, whether it comes in this life or the next. Let us not be shaken by the taunts of those who doubt, for their words are but a test of our patience and trust in Allah. The Qur'an reassures us that every promise of Allah—whether of reward for the righteous or punishment for the wicked—will undoubtedly be fulfilled. So hold firm to your faith, and let your actions speak louder than their words, for the ultimate victory belongs to the believers.

📜 Verse 69-73 — An-Naml

Say, [O Muhammad], "Travel through the land and observe how was the end of the criminals."
And grieve not over them or be in distress from what they conspire.
And they say, "When is [the fulfillment of] this promise, if you should be truthful?"
Say, "Perhaps it is close behind you - some of that for which you are impatient.
And indeed, your Lord is full of bounty for the people, but most of them do not show gratitude."
