Explanation of the Verse:
This verse takes us into one of the most delicate and emotionally charged moments in the story of Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him. After the infant Musa was cast into the river in a chest, as Allah had inspired his mother to do, the chest was carried by the waves until it reached the palace of Pharaoh. There, the household of the tyrant picked it up, and the baby was brought into the very house of the man who had ordered the killing of all newborn Israelite boys.
Now, imagine the state of Musa's mother. She had placed her infant in the river, trusting in Allah's promise that He would return him to her and make him one of the messengers. But when she learned that her son had fallen into the hands of Pharaoh—the very enemy who slaughtered innocent children—her heart became empty. It was emptied of all worldly matters, of food, sleep, comfort, and even of her own self. Nothing remained in her heart except the overwhelming thought and grief for her son Musa. This is the meaning of "her heart became empty"—it was so consumed by worry and love for her child that it was as if nothing else existed within her.
The verse then reveals the intensity of her emotional state: she was on the verge of revealing that the baby was her son. Her motherly instinct, her overwhelming love, and her anguish nearly pushed her to cry out, "He is my son!" Such a revelation would have been catastrophic—it would have led to her death and the certain killing of Musa. But Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, intervened. He "bound" her heart, strengthening it with patience, steadfastness, and divine calm. He held her heart steady so that she would not speak a word that could bring destruction upon herself and her child.
This divine strengthening was not merely to protect her in that moment; it was to make her one of the believers—those who truly trust in Allah's promise, who are certain that His word never fails, and who remain patient through the most trying of circumstances. Her faith was being purified and elevated through this trial, and Allah was teaching her—and all of us—that when we place our affairs in His hands, He will never abandon us, even when the situation appears utterly hopeless.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Beloved reader, ponder deeply on this scene. A mother's heart, torn by love and fear, is steadied by the hand of Allah Himself. This is the reality of tawakkul (reliance on Allah)—it does not mean that trials will not come, nor that hearts will not ache. Rather, it means that even in the depths of sorrow, Allah places a calm and certainty in the believer's heart that transcends human understanding. When you feel your own heart empty and overwhelmed by the worries of this life, remember that the same Allah who bound the heart of Musa's mother is with you. He sees your tears, He knows your pain, and He is capable of turning the most desperate situation into a source of strength and honor. Turn to Him, pour out your heart in du'a, and trust that His promise is true. For just as He reunited Musa with his mother and made him a prophet, He will never leave you without a way out. This is the beauty of Islam—a faith that does not promise a life without storms, but promises a Captain who calms every sea.
