Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, reassuring him and affirming the divine origin of the revelation he received. Allah tells him: "But We created generations after Moses, and time stretched on for them"—meaning that after Prophet Moses (peace be upon him), many nations came and went, and long periods passed. As time went by, people forgot the covenant of Allah, neglected His commands, and the stories of Moses and his people became distant memories, lost to the passage of centuries.
Then Allah says: "And you were not dwelling among the people of Madyan, reciting to them Our verses." This is a powerful point—the Prophet ﷺ was not present in Madyan, nor did he live among its people, nor did he read any of the earlier scriptures to learn the story of Moses and his time in Madyan. He was an unlettered man (ummi) living in Makkah, far away from those events and places. He had no means of knowing these detailed historical accounts through human learning or travel.
Yet, despite all this, he came to his people with the precise and accurate story of Moses, his flight to Madyan, his meeting with the righteous man (Shu'ayb, peace be upon him), his marriage, and his return to Egypt—all with perfect detail. How could he have known all this if it were not revealed to him by Allah?
The verse concludes: "But We were senders of messengers." This means: We sent you as a Messenger, O Muhammad, and We revealed to you this knowledge through divine inspiration. It was not through your own presence or study, but through Our choice and Our sending of you with the truth. This is a clear sign of your prophethood and a proof that what you bring is from Allah alone.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the beauty of this divine proof! The Prophet ﷺ, who never learned to read or write, who never traveled to the lands of the earlier prophets, who grew up in an environment of ignorance and idolatry—was able to narrate the unseen past with such precision that no scholar or historian could match it. This is not the work of a human mind; it is the revelation of the All-Knowing Creator.
This verse invites you to strengthen your faith in the truth of Islam. When you see how Allah supported His Messenger with such miraculous knowledge, you realize that this religion is built upon divine revelation, not human invention. The Quran is the living miracle that continues to guide humanity to the straight path.
Let this be a reminder that Allah, who knows the past and the future, has sent us this Book as a mercy and a light. He did not leave us in darkness; He sent messengers to guide us, and He preserved the final message in the Quran for all of humanity until the end of time. Embrace this guidance with an open heart, and you will find peace, purpose, and success in this life and the Hereafter.
