Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Waylakum" (وَيْلَكُمْ): An expression of warning and rebuke, originally a supplication for destruction, but used here as a strong admonition to deter someone from a harmful course of action.
- "Thawabullah" (ثَوَابُ اللَّهِ): The reward and recompense that Allah has prepared for His righteous servants in the Hereafter.
- "La yulaqqaha" (لَا يُلَقَّاهَا): None is granted or guided to this — referring to the wise statement and the ability to act upon it.
- "Al-Sabirun" (الصَّابِرُونَ): Those who patiently persevere — restraining themselves from forbidden desires and enduring hardship in obedience to Allah.
Explanation of the Verse:
When Qarun (Korah) emerged before his people in all his splendor and magnificence, some among the people were overtaken by envy and longing. They exclaimed, "Oh, how we wish we had what Qarun has been given! Indeed, he is a man of great fortune!" But then, the people of true knowledge — those who had been granted deep understanding of Allah's religion and the realities of this world and the next — stepped forward to correct this dangerous mindset. They addressed those envious ones with a firm and compassionate warning: "Woe to you! Do not let yourselves be deceived by the glitter of this fleeting world. The reward of Allah in the Hereafter — the eternal bliss, the gardens of Paradise, the pleasure of the Lord — is far better and more lasting for the one who truly believes in Allah and His messengers and performs righteous deeds."
These scholars of truth were not merely criticizing Qarun's wealth; they were redirecting the hearts of the people toward what truly matters. They were reminding them that the temporary enjoyment of this world, no matter how grand, cannot compare to the everlasting reward that awaits the believers. The wealth of Qarun was destined to perish, but the reward of Allah is eternal and never-ending.
Then the verse concludes with a profound truth: "And none is granted this — this wise counsel, this correct perspective, this ability to prefer the Hereafter over the world — except those who are patient." This means that the ability to say such a word and, more importantly, to live by it, is not easy. It requires patience — patience in restraining the soul from its cravings, patience in performing acts of obedience, patience in avoiding sins, and patience in holding firm to faith even when surrounded by temptations. The envious look at the wealthy and feel deprived; the patient look at the Hereafter and feel enriched. The envious are shaken by what others possess; the patient are anchored by what they themselves have been promised by Allah.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for every one of us. In our daily lives, we are constantly surrounded by people who have been given wealth, status, beauty, or power. The media, social platforms, and even our own circles may tempt us to compare ourselves with others and wish for what they have. But the people of knowledge — those who truly understand the purpose of life — remind us: the real treasure is not in what you accumulate in this world, but in what you send forward for your Hereafter. Faith and righteous deeds are the investments that never fail, and their returns are beyond imagination.
Let this verse be a source of comfort and strength for you. When you see someone blessed with worldly riches, do not let envy creep into your heart. Instead, say: "Whatever Allah has promised the believers is far better." And know that this beautiful perspective — this ability to prioritize the eternal over the temporary — is a gift from Allah, granted to those who patiently strive against their own desires. So train yourself to be among the patient ones. Be patient in prayer, patient in honesty, patient in kindness, patient in avoiding what Allah has forbidden. For indeed, the patient will be given their reward without measure, and they will be the ones who taste the sweetness of faith in this life and the ultimate bliss in the next. May Allah make us among them.
