Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Farada (فَرَضَ): Made obligatory, ordained, or imposed as a binding duty.
  • Maʿād (مَعَادٍ): The place of return; here, it refers to Makkah, the city the Prophet ﷺ was compelled to leave.
  • Ḍalāl mubīn (ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ): Clear, manifest error or misguidance.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse was revealed during a profoundly emotional moment in the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ life—as he was leaving Makkah, forced to emigrate to Madinah. His heart ached for his beloved city, the home of the Kaaba, where he had spent fifty-three years of his life. It was then that Allah, the Most Merciful, sent down this divine reassurance.

Allah declares: "Indeed, the One who made the Qur'an obligatory upon you—who revealed it to you and commanded you to convey it, act upon it, and uphold its teachings—will surely return you to a place of return." This is a direct promise from Allah to His Messenger ﷺ that he would return to Makkah, not as a defeated exile, but as a victorious conqueror. And indeed, this promise was fulfilled when the Prophet ﷺ entered Makkah triumphantly in the 8th year after Hijrah, humbly bowing to Allah in gratitude.

Then Allah instructs His Prophet ﷺ to respond to the disbelievers who doubted him: "Say: My Lord knows best who has come with guidance and who is in clear error." This is a powerful statement of certainty and trust in Allah's knowledge. The Prophet ﷺ is told to leave the judgment to Allah, for He alone knows the true state of every soul. The one who brought the Qur'an—the ultimate guidance—is on the path of truth, while those who reject it are in obvious misguidance, even if they do not perceive it themselves.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. When you are steadfast upon the path of Allah, even when the world seems to turn against you, remember that Allah has not forgotten you. Just as He promised His Prophet ﷺ a triumphant return to the place he loved, He promises every sincere believer that their sacrifices will not be in vain. The road of faith may be long and arduous, but the destination is always victory—whether in this life or the next.

Moreover, the verse teaches us a beautiful etiquette in dealing with those who oppose the truth. Instead of engaging in futile arguments or trying to prove oneself, we are guided to say: "My Lord knows best." This is not a statement of weakness, but of profound strength—the strength of one who places their complete trust in Allah's perfect knowledge and justice. Allah knows who is upon guidance and who is in error, and He will deal with each accordingly.

So, dear reader, hold fast to the Qur'an. Let it be your companion, your guide, and your comfort. For the One who revealed it to you has promised to be with you, to protect you, and to grant you a beautiful return—to your loved ones, to your homeland, or to the eternal bliss of Paradise. Never doubt that Allah's promise is true, for He is the Most Faithful of all who make promises.

That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.
Whoever comes [on the Day of Judgement] with a good deed will have better than it; and whoever comes with an evil deed - then those who did evil deeds will not be recompensed except [as much as] what they used to do.
Indeed, [O Muhammad], He who imposed upon you the Qur'an will take you back to a place of return. Say, "My Lord is most knowing of who brings guidance and who is in clear error."
And you were not expecting that the Book would be conveyed to you, but [it is] a mercy from your Lord. So do not be an assistant to the disbelievers.
And never let them avert you from the verses of Allah after they have been revealed to you. And invite [people] to your Lord. And never be of those who associate others with Allah.
