Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Tarjū (تَرْجُو): To hope, expect, or anticipate.
  • Yulqā (يُلْقَىٰ): To be cast or delivered; here, it refers to the revelation being sent down.
  • Al-Kitāb (الْكِتَابُ): The Book, i.e., the Qur’an.
  • Rahmah (رَحْمَةً): Mercy, compassion, or a favour.
  • Dhahīr (ظَهِيرًا): A helper, supporter, or backer.

Explanation of the Verse:

O Messenger of Allah, before this revelation came to you, you never hoped or expected that the Qur’an would be sent down to you. You were not anticipating it, nor did you have any means to bring it about by your own effort or knowledge. It was purely an act of mercy from your Lord that He chose you to receive this mighty Book and honoured you with prophethood. This was not because of any merit you claimed, but solely because of Allah’s boundless grace and compassion towards you and towards all of humanity.

This profound truth carries a powerful lesson: since the Qur’an is a divine favour bestowed upon you out of mercy, you must never become a supporter or ally of those who reject this truth. Do not lean towards the disbelievers, do not seek their approval, and do not compromise your mission to accommodate their falsehood. Your role is to stand firm upon the truth, to convey the message with sincerity, and to rely entirely on Allah—not on the favour or acceptance of those who deny His signs.

The verse is a reminder that the honour of prophethood and the gift of the Qur’an are not rewards for personal ambition, but a mercy that demands gratitude, steadfastness, and unwavering loyalty to Allah’s cause. It also reassures the believer that when Allah grants a favour, He also grants the strength to uphold it, and He forbids any form of dependence on those who oppose His guidance.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, reflect on the immense mercy of Allah: He sent you a Book that guides you from darkness to light, from confusion to certainty, and from despair to hope—without you ever deserving it or asking for it. This is the nature of Allah’s love for His servants: He reaches out to them with guidance even before they seek it. So, let this verse fill your heart with gratitude, and let it strengthen your resolve to never support falsehood, no matter how attractive or powerful it may appear. Stand with the truth, and Allah will stand with you. The Qur’an is your treasure—hold it firmly, live by it, and invite others to its light with wisdom and kindness. Indeed, in this Book lies your honour in this life and your salvation in the next.

📜 Verse 84-88 — Al-Qasas

Whoever comes [on the Day of Judgement] with a good deed will have better than it; and whoever comes with an evil deed - then those who did evil deeds will not be recompensed except [as much as] what they used to do.
Indeed, [O Muhammad], He who imposed upon you the Qur'an will take you back to a place of return. Say, "My Lord is most knowing of who brings guidance and who is in clear error."
And you were not expecting that the Book would be conveyed to you, but [it is] a mercy from your Lord. So do not be an assistant to the disbelievers.
And never let them avert you from the verses of Allah after they have been revealed to you. And invite [people] to your Lord. And never be of those who associate others with Allah.
And do not invoke with Allah another deity. There is no deity except Him. Everything will be destroyed except His Face. His is the judgement, and to Him you will be returned.
