Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Hasanah (الحسنة): A righteous deed performed sincerely for Allah, in accordance with His commandments — such as prayer, charity, fasting, and acts of kindness.
- Al-Sayyi'ah (السيئة): An evil deed — such as disbelief, usury, adultery, or any transgression against Allah's limits.
- Khayr minhā (خير منها): Something better than it — meaning a reward far greater and more excellent than the deed itself.
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Judgment, when every soul stands before its Lord, the scales of divine justice and mercy will be set. Allah — in His infinite wisdom and grace — declares that whoever comes with a good deed, performed sincerely and in accordance with His revealed guidance, will receive a reward that is better and greater than the deed itself. This is not merely a one-to-one exchange; rather, Allah multiplies the reward of a single good deed up to ten times its like, and He may increase it even further for whom He wills. The ultimate "better" reward is Paradise — the eternal abode of bliss, where no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has ever conceived of its delights. This is the boundless generosity of the Most Merciful, who does not need our deeds but showers us with His bounty out of pure love and kindness.
On the other hand, whoever comes with an evil deed — whether it be disbelief, oppression, or any transgression — will not be punished beyond the measure of what they did. There is no multiplication of punishment, no exaggeration in recompense. The justice of Allah is perfect: a single evil deed is met with a single equivalent consequence, no more. This is a manifestation of His mercy — for while He multiplies rewards tenfold and more, He does not multiply punishments. He is the Most Just, and His justice is tempered with grace, for He says in another verse: "Whoever comes with a good deed will have ten times its like, and whoever comes with an evil deed will only be recompensed with the like of it, and they will not be wronged" (Al-An'am 6:160).
This verse carries a profound and heartwarming message for every believer: your Lord is not a harsh accountant seeking to catch your every fault. Rather, He is the Generous Giver who magnifies your smallest good deeds into treasures beyond imagination, while dealing with your shortcomings with perfect fairness and restraint. So race toward good deeds, no matter how small they may seem — for a single sincere act of kindness, a single prayer offered with humility, a single word of truth spoken with courage, can become the key to eternal bliss. And be ever mindful of evil, for even a single sin carries its weight — but know that the door of repentance is always open, and Allah's mercy encompasses all things. Let this verse inspire you to fill your days with goodness, knowing that your Lord's reward is greater than you can ever imagine, and His justice is tempered with a mercy that surpasses all understanding.
