Key Words and Phrases:
- Athqālahum (أَثْقَالَهُمْ): Their heavy burdens — meaning their sins, wrongdoings, and the weight of their misdeeds.
- Athqālan ma‘a athqālihim (أَثْقَالًا مَّعَ أَثْقَالِهِمْ): Additional burdens along with their own — referring to the sins of those whom they misled, which they will also carry.
- Yaftarūn (يَفْتَرُونَ): They fabricate or invent — referring to their lies and falsehoods against Allah and His religion.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this powerful verse, Allah addresses those who call others to disbelief and falsehood, warning them of a severe consequence. They will not only bear the full weight of their own sins — the evil deeds they committed themselves — but they will also carry the sins of those whom they led astray, without that reducing anything from the burden of their followers. This is a profound act of divine justice: the leaders of misguidance are held accountable for their own corruption and for the corruption they spread among others.
On the Day of Resurrection, they will be questioned with a stern and humiliating interrogation about the lies they fabricated — their false claims about Allah, their denial of the truth, and their inventions meant to mislead people. This questioning is one of rebuke and exposure, showing them the reality of their deception before they face the punishment they deserve.
This verse serves as a serious warning to anyone who influences others toward evil: the responsibility is immense, and the consequences are doubled. At the same time, it is a mercy for those who follow the truth — for they are not held accountable for the sins of their leaders, but only for their own choices.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to reflect on the weight of your influence. Every person has a circle of impact — family, friends, colleagues, or followers. When you call others to goodness, you earn reward not only for your own good deeds but also for theirs, without diminishing their reward. Conversely, when you lead others toward sin, you bear the burden of their wrongdoing as well. What a beautiful opportunity this is! You can multiply your good deeds simply by guiding others to the straight path. And what a grave warning it is — never to be the cause of someone else's misguidance.
Islam teaches us that we are our brothers' keepers in the noblest sense: we care for their faith, their well-being, and their eternal success. So let this verse inspire you to be a beacon of light, calling to truth with wisdom and kindness, and to purify your own soul from every falsehood. The Day of Judgment is real, and the questioning is certain — but for those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds, Allah's mercy is far greater than any burden they could ever carry. Turn to Him now, before that Day arrives, and you will find Him ready to forgive and reward beyond your imagination.
