Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Rabbi (رَبِّ): My Lord, the One who created, sustains, and has full authority over all affairs.
- Unṣurnī (انصُرْنِي): Help me, grant me victory and support.
- Al-Qawm al-Mufsidīn (الْقَوْمِ الْمُفْسِدِينَ): The people who spread corruption and mischief, those who persist in wrongdoing and transgression.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) had exhausted every means of guiding his people—calling them to purity, warning them against their abominable practices, and reminding them of Allah's punishment—they not only rejected his message but defiantly challenged him, saying: "Bring us the punishment of Allah if you are truthful." They even demanded that he hasten the divine wrath upon them, mocking his warnings and persisting in their corruption.
At that moment, with a heart full of certainty and trust in his Lord, Prophet Lot turned to Allah in humble supplication, saying: "My Lord, help me against the people who spread corruption." He asked his Lord to grant him victory over them by sending down the punishment they had arrogantly requested—a punishment that would silence their falsehood and vindicate the truth he had brought. These were people who had corrupted the earth through their disbelief, their open commission of abominable sins, and their efforts to drag others into the same depravity, calling them to what was forbidden and making evil seem attractive.
This supplication was not born of personal vengeance or worldly desire; rather, it was a plea for justice and the protection of faith. Prophet Lot sought to defend the sanctity of Allah's commands and to purify the earth from those who had made corruption their way of life. His words reflect the profound patience of a prophet who endured years of rejection, yet never lost hope in Allah's help. And indeed, Allah answered his call, sending down a punishment that destroyed those corrupt people entirely, leaving their land overturned as a sign for those who reflect.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse teaches us a powerful lesson about the relationship between the believer and Allah in times of hardship. When you have done your part—when you have advised, guided, and warned with wisdom and patience—and the people still persist in their corruption, then turn to Allah with sincere supplication. He is the ultimate source of help and victory. No matter how overwhelming the forces of evil may seem, Allah's power is greater, and His response to the call of His righteous servants is certain.
It also reminds us of the importance of standing firmly against corruption and injustice. A believer is not merely a passive observer; he or she must speak the truth, enjoin good, and forbid evil. And when the burden becomes heavy, the believer's refuge is prayer and supplication to Allah, who never abandons those who call upon Him with sincerity.
Let us take comfort in knowing that the prophets themselves faced opposition and hardship, yet they never despaired. They turned to Allah, and Allah answered them. So, too, should we turn to Him in every trial, trusting that His help is near. Indeed, Allah says: "And whoever puts their trust in Allah, then He is sufficient for them" (Quran 65:3). The victory of truth over falsehood is a promise from Allah, and His promise never fails.
