Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Kitab (الْكِتَابَ): The Book, referring to the Qur'an.
- Yajhadu (يَجْحَدُ): To deny, reject, or refuse to acknowledge something while knowing it to be true — a willful, obstinate rejection.
- Al-Kafirun (الْكَافِرُونَ): Those who cover the truth and persist in disbelief, refusing to submit to Allah's signs despite their clarity.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Just as Allah sent down the Torah and other divine scriptures to the prophets before you, O Muhammad, He has sent down this glorious Qur'an to you — a Book that confirms the truth of what came before it and stands as the final, complete revelation. Those among the People of the Book who were given the Torah and truly understood it — like Abdullah ibn Salam and his companions — recognize the truth of the Qur'an and believe in it, because they find its description and the prophecies of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) written clearly in their own scriptures. Likewise, among the Arabs of Quraysh and others, there are those who embrace faith in this Qur'an and accept its guidance with sincere hearts.
But as for those who reject the signs of Allah — the clear proofs, the miraculous verses, and the undeniable evidences of His oneness and power — none do so except the stubborn disbelievers whose habit is denial and obstinacy. They know the truth in their hearts, yet they turn away out of arrogance, envy, and love of this worldly life. The Jews of Madinah, for instance, recognized the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as they recognized their own sons, yet they denied him because he was not from among them.
This verse carries a profound and beautiful message: the Qur'an is not a book for one nation or one time — it is a universal mercy that speaks to every heart that seeks the truth. The light of guidance reaches whoever opens their heart to it, whether they come from the People of the Book or from the polytheists of Arabia. The doors of faith are open to all, and the Qur'an itself is a living miracle that calls every generation to reflect, to ponder, and to submit to its Creator.
Dear reader, reflect on the greatness of this Book that Allah has preserved for us. It is the same divine message that was revealed to Moses and Jesus, perfected and completed for all of humanity. When you open the Qur'an, you are not merely reading words — you are receiving a direct communication from your Lord, a guide that illuminates your path in this world and leads you to eternal bliss in the Hereafter. Let your heart respond to its call, and you will find peace that nothing else in this world can provide.
