Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Attaqū Allāha (اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ): Fear Allah, be mindful of Him, and fulfill His commands while avoiding His prohibitions.
- Ḥaqqa tuqātih (حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ): The true and due fear of Allah — meaning to obey Him completely, not to disobey Him; to remember Him always, not to forget Him; and to thank Him, not to be ungrateful.
- Wa lā tamūtunna illā wa antum muslimūn (وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ): Do not let death overtake you except while you are in a state of complete submission to Allah (Islam).
Explanation of the Verse:
O you who have truly believed in Allah and followed His Messenger — fear Allah with the fear that He truly deserves. This means making Him your constant priority: obey Him in what He commands, stay away from what He forbids, thank Him for His countless blessings, and keep His remembrance alive in your heart at all times. This is the essence of sincere God-consciousness (taqwā).
Then Allah adds a profound condition: "And do not die except while you are Muslims." This is a powerful call to remain steadfast in your faith until your very last breath. It urges you to hold firmly to Islam throughout your entire life, so that when death comes — and it comes to everyone — you meet your Lord in a state of submission to Him alone. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to pray: *"O Allah, make the best of my deeds my last deeds, and the best of my days the day I meet You."*
This verse is a beautiful reminder that the quality of our ending (ḥusn al-khātima) depends on the consistency of our faith and actions throughout our lives. It encourages us to never give up on repentance, to keep returning to Allah, and to surround ourselves with good company and righteous deeds that will help us remain firm until the end.
A Da‘wah-Inspired Reflection:
Dear believer, imagine meeting your Lord while your heart is full of love for Him, your tongue is moist with His remembrance, and your life has been a journey of obedience. What a beautiful meeting that would be! This verse is an invitation to live every single day as if it could be your last — not in fear and anxiety, but in beautiful readiness. Islam is not just a religion you practice; it is a way of life that shapes your identity, your choices, and your ultimate destiny. Hold on to it with all your strength, and never let go — for the one who lives in submission to Allah will die in peace, and the one who dies in peace will rise in victory. May Allah make us among those who hear this call and respond with steadfast hearts until we meet Him as Muslims.
