Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Faqeer (فقير): In this context, it refers to the false claim that Allah is in need of wealth or loans from His creation.
- Aghniya' (أغنياء): Wealthy, self-sufficient — a claim the Jews made about themselves in arrogance.
- Al-Hareeq (الحريق): The blazing, scorching Fire of Hell that burns intensely.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the All-Hearing, whose knowledge encompasses every word spoken in secret or in public, has indeed heard the shocking and blasphemous statement of those who dared to say: "Allah is poor, and we are rich." This was the vile utterance of a group of Jews who, when the verse about lending Allah a goodly loan was revealed, twisted its meaning and mocked it, claiming that Allah was asking them for a loan because He was in need. Their arrogance blinded them to the truth that Allah is Al-Ghani (the Self-Sufficient), the Owner of all riches, who has no need of any of His creation, while every single being is utterly dependent on Him.
Allah declares that He will record this heinous saying and their crime of killing the prophets without any right — a historical pattern of transgression where they murdered the messengers of Allah who came to guide them. This recording is not merely a written note; it is the establishment of their guilt before Allah, which will be the basis of their punishment.
Then, on the Day of Judgment, Allah will say to them as they are cast into the blazing Fire: "Taste the punishment of the burning Fire!" This is a direct address of humiliation and retribution — a fitting recompense for their arrogance and their crimes. The punishment is not just heat; it is a scorching, penetrating fire that reaches their very souls, and they will taste its torment forever.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It reminds us of the absolute perfection of Allah — His self-sufficiency, His power, and His justice. No one can harm Him with their words, and no one can benefit Him with their deeds. Yet, He is so Merciful that He still invites His servants to give in charity, not because He needs it, but because He wants to purify their wealth and elevate their ranks.
How beautiful is Islam that teaches us to give with a pure heart, knowing that whatever we spend for His sake is never lost — it is multiplied manifold in His sight. And how terrifying is the fate of those who mock the verses of Allah and transgress against His messengers. Let us, therefore, guard our tongues from speaking ill of Allah and His religion, and let us rush to good deeds, seeking His pleasure and His mercy. For the Fire is real, and His promise is true — and the wisest of people are those who prepare for that Day before it arrives.
