📖 English Meaning
And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, with what you do, is [fully] Acquainted.

Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Yabkhaloon (يَبْخَلُونَ): Those who withhold or are miserly — specifically, those who refuse to spend in the way of Allah and withhold the obligatory charity (Zakat) from the wealth Allah has granted them.
  • Min Fadlihi (مِن فَضْلِهِ): From His bounty and grace — meaning the wealth and provisions that Allah has generously bestowed upon them out of His favor, not because they deserved it.
  • Sayutawwaqoon (سَيُطَوَّقُونَ): They will be made to wear as a collar or necklace around their necks — a vivid image of punishment on the Day of Judgment.
  • Miraath (مِيرَاثُ): Inheritance — meaning that Allah alone remains after all creation perishes, and everything returns to Him.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah, the Most Merciful, addresses a profound spiritual ailment that afflicts the human heart — miserliness. He warns those who hoard the wealth He has given them, withholding the rights of Allah and His servants within it, not to assume that this stinginess is beneficial to them. Such a person may think, "If I give, I will lose; if I keep, I will gain." But Allah corrects this flawed reasoning with absolute clarity: "It is not good for them; rather, it is evil for them."

The wealth they cling to so tightly will become a source of torment, not comfort. On the Day of Judgment, the very wealth they refused to spend in charity will be transformed into a heavy collar placed around their necks — a serpent-like punishment that bites and stings them, as described in authentic prophetic traditions. Imagine the irony: the treasure they thought would protect them becomes the very instrument of their suffering. This is the ultimate reversal of worldly logic.

Then Allah reminds us of a fundamental truth that should liberate the heart from the love of hoarding: "And to Allah belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth." Everything you possess — your money, your property, your very life — is temporary. You came into this world with nothing, and you will leave with nothing but your deeds. The owner of all that exists is Allah alone, and He remains forever after every soul has departed. So why cling so desperately to what is not truly yours? Why withhold what Allah has commanded you to share, when you will inevitably leave it all behind?

Finally, Allah declares: "And Allah is All-Aware of what you do." Nothing escapes His knowledge — neither the charity given in secret nor the wealth withheld in greed. Every intention, every action, is recorded, and every soul will be recompensed with perfect justice.

A Call to the Heart:

Dear believer, let this verse awaken you from the illusion that wealth brings security. True security lies in giving, in trusting Allah's promise that what you spend in His cause will be multiplied and returned to you in this life and the next. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Charity does not decrease wealth." When you give, you are not losing — you are investing in a treasure that never perishes.

Open your hands, and Allah will open His gates of mercy upon you. Free your heart from the chains of miserliness, and you will taste the sweetness of generosity that the angels themselves witness. For the one who gives for the sake of Allah will find on the Day of Judgment that his charity has become a shade for him, a light for him, and a protection for him — while the one who withheld will meet the very wealth he loved as a witness against him.

Choose today: will your wealth be a collar of fire around your neck, or a crown of honor upon your head? The choice is yours, and Allah is watching with perfect knowledge.

📜 Verse 178-182 — Aal-Imran

And let not those who disbelieve ever think that [because] We extend their time [of enjoyment] it is better for them. We only extend it for them so that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment.
Allah would not leave the believers in that [state] you are in [presently] until He separates the evil from the good. Nor would Allah reveal to you the unseen. But [instead], Allah chooses of His messengers whom He wills, so believe in Allah and His messengers. And if you believe and fear Him, then for you is a great reward.
Allah has certainly heard the statement of those [Jews] who said, "Indeed, Allah is poor, while we are rich." We will record what they said and their killing of the prophets without right and will say, "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire.
That is for what your hands have put forth and because Allah is not ever unjust to [His] servants."
