Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Aṭīʿū (أَطِيعُوا): Obey, comply, and submit willingly.
- Tawallaw (تَوَلَّوْا): Turn away, reject, or abandon (the command).
- Al-Kāfirīn (الْكَافِرِينَ): Those who cover the truth, deny God’s signs, and reject His messengers.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah commands His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to address all of humanity with a clear and decisive call: "Obey Allah and the Messenger." Obedience to Allah means following His revealed Book, the Qur’an, with sincerity and devotion, while obedience to the Messenger means adhering to his authentic Sunnah (his sayings, actions, and approvals) — both during his lifetime and after his passing, as his teachings remain a living guide for all times.
The verse then delivers a profound warning: if they turn away — meaning they reject this call, persist in their arrogance, and refuse to submit to the commands of Allah and His Messenger — then they should know that Allah does not love the disbelievers. This is not merely a statement of displeasure; it is a declaration that such people are excluded from the mercy, care, and affection of their Creator. They have chosen a path that leads to loss in this world and the Hereafter, for Allah’s love is the greatest blessing a soul can attain, and His displeasure is the severest consequence.
This verse beautifully highlights the inseparable link between loving Allah and obeying His Messenger. True faith is not a mere claim of the tongue; it is a living reality demonstrated through action. When a person submits to Allah’s commands and follows the Prophet’s example, they align themselves with the divine will and earn the pleasure of their Lord. Conversely, turning away from this guidance is a sign of ingratitude and disbelief, which distances one from Allah’s love and forgiveness.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a gentle yet firm reminder that the path to Allah’s love is open to everyone who sincerely seeks it. It does not require perfection, but it does require willingness — a heart that says, "I hear and I obey." The Prophet (peace be upon him) was sent as a mercy to all worlds, and his message is a treasure that guides us through every challenge of life. By embracing obedience to Allah and His Messenger, you open the doors to peace in your heart, success in your affairs, and eternal bliss in the Hereafter. Do not let pride or hesitation hold you back, for Allah’s love is the most precious gift you can ever attain — and it is within your reach, right now, with a single sincere step toward Him.
