Explanation of the Verse:
This is the heartfelt prayer of the disciples (Hawariyyun) of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him), uttered at a moment of profound faith and sincerity. When Jesus asked, "Who will be my helpers in the cause of Allah?" they responded with unwavering commitment, and then raised this beautiful supplication to their Lord.
They said: "Our Lord, we have believed in what You have sent down" — meaning the Gospel and the divine guidance revealed to Jesus. They did not stop at mere belief; they declared, "and we have followed the Messenger" — meaning they submitted to Jesus' teachings, obeyed his commands, and walked on the path he laid out. This shows that true faith is not complete without action; belief must be accompanied by following the messenger who conveys Allah's message.
Then they pleaded: "So write us down with the witnesses" — asking Allah to record their names among those who testify to the truth. These witnesses are the ones who bore witness to Allah's Oneness and to the truthfulness of His prophets throughout history. In a broader sense, this includes the followers of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who will stand as witnesses over all nations on the Day of Judgment, as mentioned in the Quran: *"And thus We have made you a just community that you will be witnesses over the people"* (Al-Baqarah: 143). The disciples, by their sincere faith and devotion, were honored to be among that noble company.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, look at the beauty of this supplication! These noble souls combined three essential elements: belief in what Allah revealed, following His messenger, and yearning to be among the righteous witnesses. This is the complete formula for success in this life and the next.
Today, we have the final and complete revelation — the Quran — and the final messenger — Muhammad (peace be upon him). The door is wide open for you to make this same supplication with even greater conviction. Allah has honored you by making you part of the greatest Ummah, the community of Muhammad (peace be upon him), which will bear witness over all humanity.
So, let this verse inspire you: strengthen your faith in what Allah has sent down, follow the Messenger sincerely in all aspects of your life, and earnestly ask Allah to write you among His righteous witnesses. This is the path of the true believers — a path that leads to eternal bliss and the pleasure of your Lord. May Allah make us all among those who testify to the truth and are recorded with the witnesses.
