Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse is the concluding advice of Luqman the Wise to his beloved son — a timeless counsel that transcends culture and era. After guiding his son toward faith, prayer, patience, and humility in social conduct, Luqman now teaches him the art of dignified presence and refined communication.

First: Moderation in Walking — "And be moderate in your pace." This means walk with tranquility, composure, and self-respect — neither strutting with arrogance and pride, nor dragging your feet in laziness or affectation. The believer's walk reflects inner balance: it is steady, purposeful, and free from vanity. This is not merely about physical movement; it is a training of the soul to embody humility in every action. When you walk with moderation, you signal to yourself and others that you are a person of dignity who does not need to impress anyone, because your worth comes from Allah, not from your gait.

Second: Lowering the Voice — "And lower your voice." This is a direct command to control one's volume in speech. The believer should speak with gentleness and clarity — loud enough to be heard, but never so loud as to disturb, dominate, or annoy. Raising one's voice unnecessarily is a sign of poor self-control and a lack of respect for others. However, this does not forbid raising the voice in legitimate contexts, such as calling people to prayer (Adhan), teaching, or warning against danger — the command is about the default manner of conversation, which should be calm and measured.

Third: The Striking Comparison — "Indeed, the most repugnant of sounds is the voice of donkeys." Allah gives us a vivid, unforgettable image to internalize this lesson. The donkey's bray is harsh, jarring, and begins with a loud, unpleasant snort and ends with a piercing, shrill cry — a sound that grates on the ears and disturbs the peace. By comparing excessively loud voices to this, the Quran teaches us that raising one's voice beyond need is not just impolite — it is ugly, offensive, and unbecoming of a human being, let alone a believer.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and reflect: How often do we raise our voices in anger, in argument, or even in everyday conversation without realizing the harm we cause? This verse is a divine mirror held up to our behavior. It invites us to be people of *ḥilm* (forbearance) and *waqār* (dignity) — those whose presence brings calm, and whose words carry weight precisely because they are not shouted.

Imagine the beauty of a community where people walk with humility, speak with gentleness, and treat one another with respect. That is the vision of Islam — a faith that polishes every aspect of human character. When you lower your voice, you elevate your status in the sight of Allah and in the hearts of people. When you walk with moderation, you walk in the footsteps of the Prophet ﷺ, whose gait was described as swift yet dignified, and whose speech was always measured and kind.

Let this verse be a daily reminder: your body and your voice are trusts from Allah. Use them to spread peace, not noise; to build bridges, not walls. And know that the angels write down your deeds — even the tone of your speech. So choose the path of beauty, for Allah loves those who are excellent in all things.

📜 Verse 17-21 — Luqman

O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination.
And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.
And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys."
Do you not see that Allah has made subject to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth and amply bestowed upon you His favors, [both] apparent and unapparent? But of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening Book [from Him].
And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allah has revealed," they say, "Rather, we will follow that upon which we found our fathers." Even if Satan was inviting them to the punishment of the Blaze?
