Surah Luqman — Verse 18

Word Meanings:

• لَا تُصَعِّرْ خَدَّكَ – Do not turn your cheek away (i.e., do not turn your face aside in arrogance).
• مَرَحًا – With excessive joy, pride, and insolence (walking with vain, haughty gait).
• مُخْتَالٍ – One who is conceited and self-amazed, strutting with pride.
• فَخُورٍ – One who boasts and brags about what he has, looking down on others.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This noble verse is a beautiful piece of fatherly advice from Luqman the Wise to his son, yet it carries a universal message for every believer. Allah commands us through this verse to adopt humility and abandon arrogance in our daily interactions.

First, Allah says: "And do not turn your cheek away from people." This means do not twist your face away from others when you speak to them or they speak to you, as if you are too important to look at them. This includes avoiding any gesture that shows disdain, contempt, or a sense of superiority—whether by turning your face, rolling your eyes, or looking down on others. A believer is called to meet people with a smiling face, kind words, and a gentle demeanor, for even a cheerful face is a form of charity.

Second, Allah says: "And do not walk upon the earth exultantly." This refers to walking with arrogance, pride, and self-admiration—strutting, swaggering, or making oneself appear grand and mighty. Such behavior reflects an inflated ego and a heart filled with vanity. The earth beneath you is humble and flat; you walk upon it, not above it. You are a servant of Allah, not a tyrant. Walking with humility is a sign of gratitude to Allah, while walking with pride is a sign of ingratitude.

Then Allah concludes with a powerful warning: "Indeed, Allah does not love every arrogant boaster." This is a stern reminder that arrogance is among the most detested qualities in the sight of Allah. The one who is *mukhtal* (conceited in his walk and manner) and *fakhur* (boastful in his speech and actions) distances himself from Allah's love. And when Allah does not love a person, he is deprived of divine mercy, guidance, and success in this life and the Hereafter.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, this verse is a mirror for your soul. Ask yourself: Do I look down on others because of their wealth, status, or appearance? Do I walk with pride, feeling that I am better than those around me? Remember that Allah looks not at your outward form or your possessions, but at your heart and your deeds. Humility is a crown worn by the prophets and the righteous. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the humblest of people—he would greet children, sit with the poor, and never turn his face away from anyone who spoke to him.

Let this verse inspire you to soften your heart, lower your gaze in humility, and treat every person with dignity and respect. For the one who humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah raises him in rank. And the one who is arrogant, Allah lowers him, no matter how grand he appears in this world. Choose humility today, and you will find peace in your heart, love in your relationships, and the pleasure of your Lord.
