Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet, Allah commands you to address your wives who had gathered together and asked for an increase in worldly provisions — something you did not have the means to grant them at that time. Say to them clearly and with dignity: "If your true desire is the fleeting life of this world with its glitter and adornment — its wealth, comforts, and pleasures — then come forward, and I will give you a generous gift as a provision, and I will let you go in a manner that is beautiful and kind, without any harm, oppression, or humiliation."
This verse presents a profound moment of choice, where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was instructed to place before his noble wives a clear decision: the transient attractions of this world or the eternal reward of the Hereafter — which meant remaining with the Messenger of Allah in a life of simplicity, patience, and devotion. The "gracious release" refers to a divorce carried out with kindness and respect, fulfilling all rights, without any form of injury or mistreatment.
This was a unique test of sincerity and faith, and it was from the special characteristics of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he was commanded to give this choice. The verse teaches us a timeless lesson: that a believer must always weigh the temporary pleasures of this world against the everlasting bliss of the Hereafter. It calls us to purify our intentions and to prefer what is with Allah over what is with the creation, for the world is but a passing shadow, while the Hereafter is the true and everlasting life.
Dear reader, let this verse inspire you to examine your own heart: when faced with the choice between worldly gain and spiritual contentment, which do you choose? The Prophet's wives chose Allah and His Messenger, and their reward was immense — both in this life and in the Hereafter. May Allah grant us the wisdom to always prefer what pleases Him, and to find true happiness in faith and righteousness.
