Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Dawabb (الدواب): All creatures that move on the earth, including animals, insects, and beasts.
- Al-An'am (الأنعام): Livestock specifically — camels, cattle, and sheep/goats.
- Yakhsha (يخشى): To fear with reverence, awe, and consciousness of Allah's greatness and power.
- Al-Ulama (العلماء): Those who possess true knowledge and understanding of Allah, His attributes, His commands, and His creation.
Explanation of the Verse:
Just as Allah has created fruits, mountains, and other things in varied colors — red, white, black, and everything in between — He has also created human beings, moving creatures, and livestock in a similar diversity of colors and forms. This variety is not random; it is a sign of Allah's boundless power and wisdom. Some people are dark-skinned, some fair, some have different features; animals too come in countless shades and patterns. All of this points to the greatness of the Creator, who alone can produce such infinite diversity from a single origin.
From this, the verse draws a profound conclusion: "Indeed, only those among His servants who possess knowledge truly fear Allah." This means that the ones who genuinely revere Allah, who stand in awe of His majesty, and who are mindful of His commands are those who have deep understanding — knowledge of Allah's names and attributes, knowledge of His religion, and knowledge of His creation. They look at the universe around them and see the fingerprints of their Lord. They reflect on how a single drop of water, soil, and the same basic elements can produce such astonishing variety in humans, animals, and plants — and they realize that this could only come from the Almighty.
Such knowledge is not merely intellectual; it transforms the heart. It fills it with humility, gratitude, and a sincere desire to obey Allah and avoid what He has forbidden. The ignorant person may look at these same signs and see nothing, but the knowledgeable believer sees in every color, every creature, and every difference a lesson and a reminder.
The verse concludes with two of Allah's beautiful attributes: "Indeed, Allah is Almighty, All-Forgiving." He is Al-Aziz — the Mighty, the Invincible, the One whose power nothing can overcome. And He is Al-Ghafur — the Forgiving, the One who pardons the sins of His repentant servants and rewards them with His mercy and bounty.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to open your eyes to the world around you. Look at the diversity of human beings — different colors, languages, and features — and know that this is a sign of Allah's creative power. Look at the animals and livestock that serve you, each with its own beauty and purpose. All of this is a living lesson for those who reflect.
The true scholars — those who benefit from their knowledge — are not merely those who accumulate facts, but those whose knowledge increases their fear of Allah, their love for Him, and their obedience to Him. So ask yourself: Does my knowledge bring me closer to my Creator? Does it make me more humble, more grateful, more devoted?
Let this verse be a reminder that the purpose of knowledge is not pride or status, but reverence for Allah and righteous action. And know that no matter how many sins you have committed, Allah is Al-Ghafur — He forgives those who turn to Him sincerely. His door of repentance is always open. So come back to Him, learn about Him, and let that knowledge transform your heart and your life.
