Surah Yasin — Verse 18

Word Meanings:

• تَطَيَّرْنَا (tataiyarnā): We consider you an ill omen; we see you as a source of bad luck and misfortune.
• لَنَرْجُمَنَّكُمْ (lanarjumannakum): We will surely stone you to death.
• عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ (ʿadhābun alīm): A painful, severe punishment.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The people of the town, upon hearing the messengers' call to worship Allah alone, responded with hostility and ignorance. They said: "We see you as a bad omen for us. We believe that your presence and your message have brought us misfortune and calamity." This was their misguided reasoning—attributing their hardships to the very people who came to guide them toward the truth.

They then threatened the messengers, saying: "If you do not stop calling us to abandon our gods and worship Allah alone, we will stone you with rocks until you die, and you will certainly taste from us a painful and agonizing punishment."

This verse reveals the deep arrogance and stubbornness of those who reject the truth. Instead of reflecting on the message, they resorted to threats and violence. They saw the call to monotheism as a disruption to their comfortable, misguided way of life, and they responded with intimidation rather than reason.

Reflection and Da'wah:

This scene from the Qur'an teaches us a profound lesson about patience and steadfastness in the face of opposition. The messengers did not waver or abandon their mission when threatened—they remained firm, knowing that Allah is their ultimate protector and supporter.

For us as believers, this verse is a reminder that when we call others to goodness and truth, we may face rejection, mockery, or even threats. But we must never lose hope or compromise our principles. The messengers' example shows us that the path of truth is not always easy, but it is always noble and ultimately victorious.

Moreover, the verse warns us against the dangerous habit of blaming others for our misfortunes. True believers understand that both good and bad come from Allah's wisdom, and we should respond to challenges with patience and trust in Him, not with superstition or hostility toward those who wish us well.

Let us strive to be like the messengers—people of courage, wisdom, and unwavering faith—who respond to ignorance with kindness and to threats with reliance on Allah. For indeed, Allah's help is near, and His promise to the righteous is true.
