- مَعَكُمْ (is with you): Their misfortune is tied to their own actions, not to the messengers.
- أَئِن ذُكِّرْتُمْ (is it because you are reminded/admonished?): Expresses astonishment at their reaction to sincere advice.
- مُسْرِفُونَ (transgressors/extravagant): Those who exceed all bounds in disbelief and sin.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the messengers of Allah responded to their people's false accusations of bringing bad luck, they made a powerful and precise rebuttal: *"Your omen is with you!"* — meaning, the misfortune you perceive is not from us; it is the direct consequence of your own disbelief, polytheism, and persistent rejection of the truth. Your evil deeds have become your own companions, and the punishment you fear is but a reflection of what your own hands have earned.
Then, with a tone of profound astonishment, they asked: *"Is it because you are reminded?"* — Are you threatening us merely because we advised you toward what is good for you in this life and the Hereafter? Is sincere counsel a crime worthy of stoning and torment? This rhetorical question exposes the absurdity of their stance, showing that their hostility was not based on any rational grievance but on sheer arrogance and stubbornness.
Finally, the messengers concluded with a decisive judgment: *"Nay, you are a people who transgress all bounds!"* — You have crossed every limit in your insolence, exceeding the boundaries of decency, reason, and faith. Your problem is not with us; it is with your own souls, which have become enslaved to extravagance in sin and rebellion against your Creator.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder this profound exchange! The messengers did not curse their people nor wish them harm; rather, they diagnosed the root cause of their misery with clarity and compassion. They taught us a timeless lesson: when we face hardship, the first place to look is within ourselves. Our trials are often the harvest of our own choices.
This verse invites you to examine your own life. Are you blaming others for your misfortunes, or are you ready to take responsibility and turn back to Allah? The messengers' words echo through time: your omen is with you — your success or failure, your peace or turmoil, all depend on your relationship with your Lord. Do not be like those who, when reminded of the truth, harden their hearts and accuse the reminder itself of being a curse.
Rather, embrace the reminder as a mercy. Let the Qur'an be a healing for your heart and a light for your path. For indeed, Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves. And He is ever ready to forgive those who turn back to Him with sincerity.
