Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Rabba-kum" (رَبَّكُمْ): Your Lord, the One who created you, sustains you, and manages all your affairs.
- "Rabba aba'ikumu al-awwalin" (وَرَبَّ آبَائِكُمُ الْأَوَّلِينَ): The Lord of your forefathers who came before you — those who have passed away in earlier generations.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse is part of the story of Prophet Ilyas (Elias, peace be upon him), who was sent to the Children of Israel. He called his people to worship Allah alone, asking them: "Do you not fear Allah?" — meaning, why do you not fear His punishment and obey His commands? He then reminded them of the essence of true worship: that Allah is the Creator and Sustainer of all beings. He is the Lord of the present generation and the Lord of all the generations that came before them. Since He alone created them and their ancestors, He alone deserves their worship, obedience, and devotion — not the idols they had fashioned with their own hands, which could neither benefit nor harm anyone.
The verse establishes a profound logical argument: if Allah is the Creator of all humanity, past and present, then He alone is worthy of worship. The idols that people worshipped had no role in creation, no power to provide sustenance, and no authority over life or death. Therefore, directing any form of worship to them is a grave injustice and a great folly.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse invites every human being to reflect on the greatest blessing they have — the blessing of existence itself. Look at yourself, dear reader: you did not create yourself, nor did your parents create you. You came into being by the will of a Supreme Creator who has always existed and who will remain forever. That Creator is Allah — the One who raised the heavens without pillars, spread the earth beneath your feet, and sent down rain to bring forth fruits for your sustenance. He is the Lord of your fathers, your grandfathers, and all the way back to Adam (peace be upon him).
When you realize that this same Allah — the Most Merciful, the Most Loving — has sent you this message through His prophets, how can your heart not soften? How can you not turn to Him in gratitude and submission? Islam is not merely a religion of rituals; it is a return to your natural disposition (fitrah) — the innate recognition that there is no god but Allah. By worshipping Him alone, you free yourself from the chains of false deities, superstitions, and worldly desires that enslave the heart. Come to the worship of the One who created you, who hears your prayers, and who promises you eternal bliss in Paradise if you obey Him. Indeed, the key to true peace and success lies in this single truth: *La ilaha illa Allah* — there is no god worthy of worship except Allah.
