Word Meanings:

  • Ṣālī al-Jaḥīm (صالِ الجحيم): The one who will enter and burn in the blazing Fire of Hell. The word "ṣālī" comes from the root meaning "to enter and be afflicted by fire," and it signifies one who is destined to endure the heat of Hell.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse concludes a powerful discourse directed at the polytheists of Makkah who threatened the Prophet (peace be upon him) and boasted about their idols. Allah (Glorious is He) makes it crystal clear that neither they nor their false deities possess any power to misguide anyone or to cause anyone to enter Hellfire. Rather, misguidance and entry into the Fire occur solely by Allah’s prior decree and perfect wisdom.

The verse states: *"Except the one who is destined to burn in the Blazing Fire."* That is, none shall be led astray or cast into Hell except those whom Allah—in His eternal knowledge and just decree—has written to be among the inhabitants of the Fire, due to their persistent disbelief, stubborn arrogance, and rejection of the truth after it became clear to them. As for you, O polytheists, and the idols you worship, you have absolutely no ability to bring about such outcomes. Allah’s decree is executed upon whom He wills, and His justice is never wronged.

This verse carries a profound reassurance: the believers need not fear the plots of the disbelievers or their idols, for all affairs rest in Allah’s hands alone. It also serves as a stern warning to those who persist in falsehood—that their end is sealed by their own choices, and no power can alter what Allah has decreed with perfect justice.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder the greatness of this truth: your destiny is not in the hands of any created being, nor in the power of any false deity. It is Allah alone who guides whom He wills and lets stray whom He wills, according to His infinite wisdom and justice. This should fill your heart with hope—for if you turn sincerely to Allah, seek His guidance, and follow His Messenger, you are on the path of salvation. And it should fill you with awe—for the Fire is real, and its inhabitants are those who knowingly reject the truth. So seize this moment: submit to your Lord, purify your worship for Him alone, and let not the whispers of Shaytan or the threats of people turn you away from the straight path. Allah’s promise is true, His decree is just, and His mercy is vast for those who repent and believe.
