Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • نِعْمَةُ رَبِّي (Ni'matu Rabbi): The grace, favour, and blessing of my Lord.
  • الْمُحْضَرِينَ (Al-Muhdarīn): Those who are brought forth and made to attend — i.e., those summoned to the punishment of Hellfire and made to be present in it.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this profound verse, the believing man who was a companion of the disbeliever in worldly life turns to his wicked friend after entering Paradise and witnessing his companion being dragged into the depths of Hellfire. He says: "Had it not been for the grace of my Lord upon me, I would have been among those brought forth to the punishment alongside you."

This statement reveals the believer's deep humility and gratitude. He fully acknowledges that his salvation was not due to his own merit or strength, but purely by the mercy and favour of Allah. The "grace" he refers to is the blessing of guidance (hidāyah) — that Allah opened his heart to faith, enabled him to believe, and kept him steadfast upon the truth until death. He recognizes that had Allah left him to himself, he would have followed the same path of denial and arrogance as his companion, and would now be standing in the very same place of torment.

The verse carries a powerful lesson: no one enters Paradise by their deeds alone, but by Allah's grace and mercy. The believer here does not boast or feel superior; rather, he expresses profound gratitude and humility, acknowledging that the difference between him and his companion was not inherent virtue, but divine favour.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and reflect upon this scene. The believer in Paradise looks at his former companion in the Fire and realizes: "That could have been me." This is the essence of true faith — never feeling secure from Allah's plan, never feeling self-sufficient, and always attributing every good to Allah's grace.

This verse invites you to examine your own life. Every time you pray, every time you resist a sin, every time you choose truth over falsehood — that is Allah's grace upon you. Do not take it for granted. Thank Him, seek His continued guidance, and let this awareness fill your heart with humility and love for your Lord.

And if you find yourself struggling with faith or surrounded by those who mock the truth, remember that the greatest blessing is not wealth or health, but the blessing of guidance. Cherish it, protect it, and ask Allah to keep you firm upon it until you meet Him — so that you, too, may never be among "those brought forth" to the punishment, but among the grateful dwellers of Paradise.
