Word Meanings:

  • تَاللَّهِ — "By Allah" — an oath used for emphasis.
  • إِن كِدتَّ — "Indeed, you almost" — expressing that something came very close to happening.
  • لَتُرْدِينِ — "You would have destroyed me" — from the root *ردى* meaning to cause ruin, destruction, or perdition (leading to one's downfall).

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, the believing person who has been admitted into Paradise addresses his wicked companion from the life of this world — the one who used to mock him, doubt the Resurrection, and call him to disbelief. Now, from the heights of bliss, the believer looks down upon his former companion suffering in the Fire, and he says with a tone of both relief and admonition: "By Allah, you almost brought about my ruin!"

He means: You nearly caused my destruction by your persistent efforts to turn me away from faith in Allah and the Hereafter. You tried your utmost to make me deny the Resurrection, to make me follow your whims and desires, and to drag me into the same misguidance you were drowning in. Had I listened to you, I would have been destroyed — both in this world and in the Hereafter. But Allah's grace and mercy saved me; He guided me to faith and kept me steadfast upon it, and so I was not among those who are brought to this punishment alongside you.

The believer's words here are not merely a statement of fact — they are a testimony of gratitude to Allah for His guidance, and a painful reminder to the disbeliever of the loss he now suffers. The believer recognizes that his salvation was not due to his own strength or intelligence, but purely by the mercy of Allah, who protected him from following the path of ruin.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This scene from the Qur'an is a powerful reminder for every one of us. How many people in our lives — friends, colleagues, even family members — try to pull us away from the straight path? They mock our prayers, belittle our faith, and make light of the Day of Judgment. They make sin look attractive and obedience look burdensome. Yet, if we hold fast to Allah's rope, He will protect us just as He protected this righteous believer.

Dear reader, do not underestimate the power of a bad companion. The Prophet ﷺ said: "A person is upon the religion of his close friend, so let each of you look to whom he befriends." (Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi). Choose your companions wisely — those who remind you of Allah, who encourage you in good, and who warn you against evil. And never forget that your salvation lies not in your own efforts alone, but in Allah's mercy and guidance. Turn to Him sincerely, ask Him to keep your heart firm upon His religion, and you will find, like this believer, that Allah's protection is greater than any plot of the devils among men and jinn.

May Allah make us among those who are saved by His grace, and may He protect us from the ruin of bad companionship and misguidance. Ameen.
