Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Āthārihim (آثَارِهِمْ): Their footsteps, tracks, or path.
  • Yuhraʿūn (يُهْرَعُونَ): They rush hastily, with speed and eagerness, without pausing to reflect.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse paints a vivid picture of blind, reckless imitation. It refers to those who found their forefathers upon a path of misguidance and polytheism, and instead of stopping to think, they rushed headlong after them with astonishing speed and zeal. They did not pause to ask: "Is this path truly right? Does it lead to salvation or ruin?" Rather, they sprinted along the footsteps of their ancestors as if driven by an unseen force, never once looking left or right to examine the evidence.

The word "yuhraʿūn" conveys more than just walking — it signifies being driven or hastened with urgency, like a herd rushing toward a destination without questioning it. This shows that their following was not based on conviction or proof, but on sheer habit, societal pressure, and blind loyalty to tradition. Even when the truth was presented to them clearly, they still raced back to the ways of their fathers, because their hearts were sealed and their minds refused to reflect.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and ask yourself: Do I follow my faith and my way of life because I have truly understood it, or merely because I inherited it? Islam honors the intellect — it commands you to think, to question, and to seek the truth with a sincere heart. The Qur'an repeatedly invites you to reflect: "Do they not then reflect on the Qur'an?" (4:82). Blind imitation of ancestors, when they were upon falsehood, is a trait condemned throughout the Qur'an. But when your forefathers were upon truth — the truth of Tawheed (monotheism) and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — then following them is a blessing, provided you do so with understanding and love, not with blind haste.

So be among those who walk the path of guidance with insight, not among those who rush into misguidance with haste. Let your feet follow the footsteps of the righteous — the Prophets and the believers — but let your heart and mind lead you with knowledge and certainty. For on the Day of Judgment, no one will be asked, "What did your ancestors do?" Rather, you will be asked: "What did you know, and what did you do with that knowledge?" Choose your path with wisdom, and rush — not toward the errors of the past — but toward the mercy and pleasure of Allah, the Most Merciful.

📜 Verse 68-72 — As-Saffat

Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire.
Indeed they found their fathers astray.
So they hastened [to follow] in their footsteps.
And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples,
And We had already sent among them warners.
