Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- أَلْفَوْا (alfaw): They found or encountered.
- آبَاءَهُمْ (aabaa'ahum): Their forefathers or ancestors.
- ضَالِّينَ (daalleen): Those who are astray,偏离 the path of guidance.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah Almighty describes the state of the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment and the reasoning behind their misguidance. He says that these people found their forefathers upon misguidance and deviation from the truth—worshipping idols, rejecting the messengers, and following falsehood. Instead of reflecting upon the truth, examining the evidence, or using their intellect to distinguish right from wrong, they blindly rushed to follow their ancestors in that path of error.
This verse highlights a profound truth about human nature: the tendency to imitate one's elders and society without question. These people did not follow their forefathers because of any proof, evidence, or logical reasoning. Rather, they simply inherited their beliefs and practices as a matter of habit and blind conformity. Their following was based on pure imitation (taqleed) without any foundation in truth or guidance.
The verse serves as a stern warning to every generation: being raised upon a certain belief or finding one's society upon a certain practice does not make it correct. Every individual is responsible for seeking the truth for themselves, using the intellect and fitrah (natural disposition) that Allah has granted them. The mere fact that "my father and grandfather did this" is not a valid justification before Allah on the Day of Judgment.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a powerful lesson for all of us. How often do we find ourselves following the ways of our society, our families, or our culture without ever asking: "Is this pleasing to Allah? Is this the truth?" The people mentioned in this verse had the same excuse—"we found our fathers doing this"—yet Allah did not accept it from them.
Islam calls you to wake up from the slumber of blind imitation. It invites you to use your God-given intellect, to ponder over the universe, to reflect upon the Quran, and to seek the truth with sincerity. When you do so, you will find that Islam is not merely a religion inherited from parents, but a living, rational, and complete way of life that answers the deepest questions of your soul.
Do not let the excuse of "following the ancestors" rob you of the greatest treasure: a direct connection with your Creator, based on knowledge, conviction, and love. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came with clear guidance, and the Quran is filled with signs for those who reflect. Take that step today—seek knowledge, ask questions, and let your heart embrace the truth with certainty. Your salvation depends not on what your fathers did, but on what you choose to do with your own life.
