Word Meanings:
- Ḥamīm (حَمِيمٌ): Boiling water that has reached the utmost degree of heat, scalding and burning.
- Ghassāq (غَسَّاقٌ): According to the most authoritative interpretations, this refers to the pus and foul fluid that oozes from the skins of the inhabitants of Hellfire. Another opinion holds that it is an intensely cold substance that burns with its extreme frigidity.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse paints a vivid and terrifying picture of the punishment that awaits the transgressors. Allah says: "This — let them taste it: boiling water and pus." The demonstrative "this" points to the torment that has just been described in the preceding verses for those who reject the truth and follow the path of arrogance and disobedience.
The first drink they are forced to swallow is ḥamīm — water that has reached the absolute peak of heat, so scorching that it sears their faces and tears apart their intestines the moment it touches their lips. It is not a drink of relief, but a drink of agony.
The second is ghassāq — the foul, putrid discharge that flows from the bodies of the damned themselves. It is the accumulation of their own wounds, sweat, and filth, mixed with the pus of their burning skins. This is what they are given to drink, and it only intensifies their suffering, never quenching their thirst but rather increasing their torment.
The verse uses the imperative "let them taste it" — a command that carries both a tone of divine justice and a chilling finality. There is no escape, no intercession, and no relief. This is their recompense for what their hands have sent forth.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has warned us clearly so that we may never reach that state. He does not wish to punish us; rather, He wishes to guide us to safety. The description of this drink is not meant to frighten us for its own sake, but to turn us back to Him in repentance while there is still time.
Imagine standing at the edge of that abyss — would you not do everything in your power to step back? The path to Paradise is paved with patience, prayer, and obedience. The path to Hell is paved with heedlessness and pride. Choose today, before tomorrow comes, for tomorrow may never arrive. Turn to Allah with a sincere heart, seek His forgiveness, and strive to live by His guidance. The doors of His mercy are wide open, and He says: "Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (Az-Zumar 39:53). Do not let this warning pass you by — let it be the turning point that brings you closer to your Lord and to the eternal bliss of His Paradise.
