Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- رَبُّ (Rabb): The Lord, Master, Owner, and Sustainer who nurtures and manages all affairs.
- الْعَزِيزُ (Al-ʿAzīz): The Almighty, the All-Powerful, the Invincible — the One whose might none can overcome or challenge.
- الْغَفَّارُ (Al-Ghaffār): The Oft-Forgiving — the One who repeatedly and abundantly forgives sins, especially for those who repent.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse declares the absolute Lordship and exclusive sovereignty of Allah over the entire universe. He is the Lord of the heavens, the Lord of the earth, and the Lord of everything that exists between them — every star, every planet, every creature, every unseen realm, and every single atom. Nothing lies outside His dominion, and no being shares even a speck of His authority.
Then the verse pairs this majestic truth with two of His most beautiful attributes. First, He is Al-ʿAzīz — the Almighty, the Invincible. His power is absolute; no force can resist His will, no plan can thwart His decree, and no one can escape His justice. Second, He is Al-Ghaffār — the Oft-Forgiving. Despite His infinite might and His ability to seize anyone in an instant, He is extraordinarily merciful and forgiving. He does not rush to punish; rather, He opens the door of repentance wide for every sinner who turns back to Him, erasing their sins and replacing them with His grace.
This combination is profoundly comforting: the One who has total power over everything is also the One who loves to forgive. His might does not make Him harsh, and His forgiveness does not make Him weak. He is both the Just King and the Merciful Forgiver.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, when you look up at the vast sky and see its countless stars, when you walk on this earth and witness its wonders, and when you ponder all that lies between them — remember that all of this belongs to One Lord alone. He is the One who created you, sustains you, and watches over you. And despite His absolute power, He invites you to come back to Him at any moment. No sin is too great for His forgiveness, as long as you sincerely repent and resolve to obey Him.
So, turn to your Lord today. Call upon Him with humility, knowing that the Almighty who holds the heavens and the earth in His grasp is also the Oft-Forgiving who waits for your return with open mercy. Let this verse fill your heart with both awe and hope — awe of His majesty, and hope in His boundless pardon. This is the beauty of Islam: a relationship with a Lord who is both supremely powerful and infinitely forgiving. Embrace it, and you will find peace beyond measure.
