- Mathalan: As a comparison or example.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, presents a profound and vivid parable to distinguish the state of a believer from that of a polytheist. Imagine two slaves: one is owned by several masters who are constantly at odds with each other, each pulling him in a different direction with conflicting demands. If he pleases one, he angers another; he lives in perpetual confusion, anxiety, and turmoil, never knowing whose command to follow or how to find stability. The second slave, however, belongs to a single master alone. He knows exactly what his master wants, understands his will, and serves him with clarity and peace of mind. His life is marked by tranquility and certainty.
Now, can these two slaves ever be equal in their condition and experience? Absolutely not! Likewise, the polytheist who worships multiple gods, deities, or false objects of devotion is like the first slave—torn between conflicting loyalties, never at rest, always in doubt and confusion. The believer, on the other hand, who devotes himself exclusively to Allah—the One and Only God—is like the second slave, living with serenity, purpose, and unwavering faith.
All praise and gratitude belong to Allah alone, for He has made the truth crystal clear and established the proof against falsehood through such striking examples. Yet, most people do not understand this reality, and that is precisely why they persist in associating partners with Him. If only they reflected, they would see the stark contrast between the peace of Tawheed (monotheism) and the chaos of Shirk (polytheism).
Dear reader, this parable is an invitation to examine your own heart. Do you seek a life of confusion and inner conflict, or do you long for peace and certainty? The answer lies in choosing Allah alone as your Master and Lord. When you submit to Him with sincerity, your heart finds rest, your mind finds clarity, and your soul finds its true purpose. This is the beauty of Islam—it liberates you from the tyranny of many masters and connects you to the One who knows you best and loves you most. Embrace this truth, and taste the sweetness of faith that no polytheist can ever experience.
