Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Aḥsana mā unzila ilaykum – "The best of what has been revealed to you" – referring to the Qur'an, which is the most excellent and complete guidance sent down from Allah.
  • Baghtatan – "Suddenly" – meaning without any prior warning or sign.
  • Lā tashʿurūn – "While you are unaware" – meaning you have no perception or realization of its approach, being preoccupied with worldly matters.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O servants of Allah, follow the best of what your Lord has revealed to you—and that is this magnificent Qur'an, for all of it is good, containing wisdom, mercy, and guidance. Embrace its commands with sincere obedience, and shun its prohibitions with genuine avoidance. Do this *before* the punishment of Allah descends upon you unexpectedly, catching you in a moment when you are heedless and unprepared. The Qur'an is not merely a book to be recited; it is a living constitution for your life, a light that illuminates your path, and a mercy that shields you from ruin. When you align your heart and actions with its teachings, you align yourself with the will of your Creator, and you secure a protection that no worldly power can grant.

The warning here is urgent: the punishment of Allah does not announce itself. It comes like a sudden storm on a clear day, or like a thief in the night, while hearts are distracted with the fleeting pleasures of this world. Therefore, race towards repentance and righteous deeds *now*, not tomorrow—for tomorrow may never come for you. The Qur'an calls you to the best of words, the best of actions, and the best of character. It elevates you from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge, from the chains of sin to the freedom of obedience, and from the fear of the unknown to the peace of certainty in Allah's promise.

Let this verse be a wake-up call to every soul: the door of repentance is open, the mercy of Allah is vast, but the time is limited. Do not let your preoccupation with wealth, status, or leisure blind you to the reality that every breath you take could be your last. The companions of the Prophet ﷺ understood this urgency—they lived with the Qur'an as their constant companion, and they were transformed into the best of generations. You too can be transformed, if you sincerely turn to this Book, ponder its verses, and implement its guidance in your daily life. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given you this warning out of love, so that you may be saved from a painful end and enter into His eternal bliss. Seize this moment, for it is the most precious opportunity you will ever have.

📜 Verse 53-57 — Az-Zumar

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
And return [in repentance] to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you; then you will not be helped.
And follow the best of what was revealed to you from your Lord before the punishment comes upon you suddenly while you do not perceive,
Lest a soul should say, "Oh [how great is] my regret over what I neglected in regard to Allah and that I was among the mockers."
Or [lest] it say, "If only Allah had guided me, I would have been among the righteous."
