Surah Az-Zumar — Verse 58

Key Words and Their Meanings:

• تَرَى الْعَذَابَ (tara al-ʿadhāb): sees the punishment — witnessing it firsthand, with one's own eyes, when it is no longer a matter of faith but of undeniable reality.
• لَوْ أَنَّ لِي كَرَّةً (law anna lī karratan): "If only I had a return" — a wish to go back to the worldly life, to have another chance.
• فَأَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ (fa-akūna min al-muḥsinīn): "so I would be among the doers of good" — those who perfect their deeds, worship Allah sincerely, and follow His commands.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues to describe the desperate state of those who turned away from the truth in this life. When the Day of Judgment arrives and they see the punishment of Allah closing in on them — a punishment they once denied or mocked — they will cry out in utter regret and confusion. They will say: "If only I could be sent back to the world! If only I had one more chance! Then I would be among those who did good — who believed, who worshipped, who obeyed."

But this wish comes too late. It is not a sincere change of heart born of love for Allah; it is a desperate plea born of terror and panic. When the punishment is seen, the door of repentance has already closed. The Qur'an tells us this not to frighten us into despair, but to awaken us while we still have time. Today, you can still say, "I will do good" — and mean it, and act on it. Today, your repentance is accepted, your prayers are heard, and your good deeds are recorded. Do not wait until you see what you cannot undo.

Dear reader, this verse is a gift of mercy. Allah is telling you now, before it is too late, that the opportunity is in your hands. You do not need to wait for a second life — this is your life, and this is your moment. Open your heart to your Lord, perform your prayers, give charity, be kind to your parents, and seek forgiveness. The door of goodness is wide open before you. Do not be among those who only remember Allah when they see the punishment. Be among those who remember Him in ease, so that they may find peace in the Hereafter.
