📖 English Meaning
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Qawwamīn (قَوَّامِينَ): Those who persistently and steadfastly uphold something, standing firm in it at all times.
  • Bil-Qisṭ (بِالْقِسْطِ): With absolute justice and fairness, giving everyone their due right without bias.
  • Shuhadā'a (شُهَدَاءَ): Witnesses who testify truthfully.
  • Talwū (تَلْوُوا): To distort or twist the testimony, changing its words or meaning.
  • Tu'riḍū (تُعْرِضُوا): To turn away from giving testimony, either by withholding it or refusing to bear witness.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O you who have truly believed in Allah and followed His Messenger! Allah calls upon you with the most honorable title — the title of faith — to be people who stand firm and unwavering in upholding justice in every aspect of your lives. Be those who establish fairness even when it is difficult, even when it goes against your own interests.

And when you bear witness, let it be purely for the sake of Allah — not for personal gain, not for tribal loyalty, not for family pride, and not out of fear or favor. Your testimony must be a reflection of the truth alone, dedicated sincerely to your Lord.

This command reaches its most challenging level when the testimony goes against yourselves — when you must admit your own fault or error — or against your parents and close relatives. This is the ultimate test of your faith: will you sacrifice your own ego and your family ties for the sake of truth? Allah commands you to do so without hesitation.

Do not let the social status of the person involved affect your judgment. If the person is wealthy, do not show favoritism out of respect for their position or fear of their influence. If the person is poor, do not withhold justice out of misplaced pity or contempt. Allah is more knowledgeable than you about what is truly beneficial for both the rich and the poor — He knows their inner realities, their needs, and their ultimate destinies. So leave their affairs to Him and simply speak the truth.

Do not follow your desires — for desires are the greatest enemy of justice. When your heart leans toward someone or something, it blinds your vision and distorts your perception. Your whims and personal inclinations will tempt you to deviate from what is right, so be vigilant against them.

And know this: if you distort your testimony by twisting your words to change the meaning, or if you turn away from bearing witness altogether by hiding the truth or refusing to testify when needed — then Allah is fully aware of everything you do. Nothing escapes His knowledge, not even the slightest intention in your heart or the smallest movement of your tongue. He will hold you accountable for every word you speak and every silence you keep.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear believer, imagine the beauty of a society where truth is upheld even against oneself — where a father testifies against his own son, where a brother admits his sibling's wrongdoing, where a person confesses their own mistake without hesitation. This is the society Islam builds: a society founded on justice that transcends personal bonds and worldly interests.

This verse is not merely a legal instruction — it is a spiritual purification. When you testify for the sake of Allah alone, you free yourself from the chains of people's opinions, from the fear of their reactions, and from the greed of their rewards. You become a servant of truth, and Allah honors those who honor justice.

So let this be your character: stand for justice even when it is bitter, speak the truth even when it is heavy, and know that Allah sees your efforts and will reward you in ways beyond your imagination. The temporary discomfort of speaking truthfully is nothing compared to the eternal honor of standing before Allah with a clear conscience.

📜 Verse 133-137 — An-Nisa

If He wills, He can do away with you, O people, and bring others [in your place]. And ever is Allah competent to do that.
Whoever desires the reward of this world - then with Allah is the reward of this world and the Hereafter. And ever is Allah Hearing and Seeing.
O you who have believed, believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Book that He sent down upon His Messenger and the Scripture which He sent down before. And whoever disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day has certainly gone far astray.
Indeed, those who have believed then disbelieved, then believed, then disbelieved, and then increased in disbelief - never will Allah forgive them, nor will He guide them to a way.
