Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- يُعْرَضُونَ عَلَيْهَا — They are shown or exposed to it (the Fire).
- غُدُوًّا وَعَشِيًّا — Morning and evening (i.e., at the beginning and end of the day).
- آلَ فِرْعَوْنَ — The people and followers of Pharaoh.
- أَشَدَّ الْعَذَابِ — The most severe punishment.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse reveals a profound truth about the fate of Pharaoh and his people after their destruction. When they drowned in the sea, that was not the end of their suffering — rather, it was only the beginning of a continuous torment. Allah tells us that they are now being shown the Fire in their graves, morning and evening, as a foretaste of what awaits them. This exposure to the Fire is a real punishment that occurs in the realm of the Barzakh (the interval between death and the Day of Resurrection). It is a glimpse of the eternal punishment that awaits them, keeping their torment alive and ever-present.
Then, when the Hour comes and the Day of Judgment is established, a command will be given to the angels: "Admit the people of Pharaoh into the severest punishment." This is the ultimate and complete punishment — no longer just a glimpse, but full immersion in the blazing Fire, where they will remain forever, suffering the most intense forms of chastisement for their arrogance, disbelief, and their relentless efforts to turn people away from the path of Allah.
This verse is a fundamental proof of the punishment of the grave, which is a reality affirmed by the Qur'an and the authentic teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It serves as a powerful reminder that death is not the end, but a transition to another stage of existence where accountability begins.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. The people of Pharaoh were among the most powerful and tyrannical nations in history. They had wealth, armies, and dominion, yet none of that could save them from the punishment of Allah. Their power was rendered useless in the face of divine justice.
This verse is not just a historical account — it is a living lesson for all of humanity. It teaches us that no matter how great our worldly achievements may be, what truly matters is our relationship with our Creator. It calls us to examine our own lives: Are we following the path of truth and righteousness, or are we, like Pharaoh, consumed by pride and arrogance?
The good news is that Allah's mercy is vast and His door of repentance is open until the moment of death. Unlike Pharaoh, who only believed when it was too late, we have the opportunity today to turn back to Allah, to seek His forgiveness, and to live a life that pleases Him. Let us not wait until we see the Fire before we wake up. Let us seize this moment, embrace the light of faith, and strive for a life that leads us to the eternal gardens of Paradise, far away from the severe punishment that awaits those who reject the truth.
