Word Meanings:
- حَقَّتْ (Haqqat): Became certain, inevitable, and firmly established.
- كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ (Kalimatu Rabbik): The Word of your Lord — referring to His decree and judgment of punishment.
- أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ (As-hābu an-Nār): The companions/inhabitants of the Fire — meaning those who will dwell in it forever.
Explanation of the Verse:
Just as the decree of punishment was fulfilled upon the disbelieving nations of the past — those who rejected their messengers and persisted in denial — so too has the Word of your Lord, O Messenger, become inevitably binding upon the disbelievers of your people. The divine judgment has been sealed: they are the companions of the Fire, destined to abide in it eternally.
This verse carries a profound and solemn truth: Allah’s justice is absolute and His decree is inescapable. When a people reject the truth after it has been made clear to them, and they persist in arrogance and disbelief, the mercy of Allah does not contradict His justice. The same law that befell the nations of old — ‘Ād, Thamūd, Pharaoh and his hosts — applies equally to those who follow their path. There is no favoritism in Allah’s judgment, for He is the Most Just, the All-Wise.
Yet within this stern warning lies a hidden mercy and a call to reflection. The fact that the decree is mentioned as "the Word of your Lord" reminds us that Allah does not punish a people until the proof has been established and the message has reached them clearly. It is a call to every soul to examine its standing before Allah — for the door of repentance remains open until the final moment, and the mercy of Allah encompasses all things for those who turn back to Him.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
O reader, this verse is not merely a historical statement — it is a living reality. The Fire is real, and the path to it is paved with arrogance, denial, and persistence in sin. But the Qur’an does not leave us in despair; rather, it awakens the heart. If you find yourself distant from Allah, know that His mercy is greater than your sins. The very fact that you are reading these words is an opportunity — a chance to be among those who heed the warning, who turn back to their Lord, and who are saved from the fate of the disbelievers. Do not let your heart be hardened like those who came before. Respond to the call of faith today, for tomorrow may be too late. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah accepts the repentance of His servant as long as the soul has not reached the throat." So hasten to repentance, and let this verse be a turning point in your life — from heedlessness to awareness, from distance to closeness, from the path of the Fire to the path of Paradise.
