Word Meanings:

  • Thumma (ثُمَّ): Then, indicating sequence after a preceding event.
  • Qeela lahum (قِيلَ لَهُمْ): It was said to them—a statement directed at them.
  • Ayna (أَيْنَ): Where—a question of location, used here rhetorically for rebuke.
  • Ma kuntum tushrikoon (مَا كُنتُمْ تُشْرِكُونَ): That which you used to associate (with Allah)—referring to the false deities and idols they worshipped alongside Allah in the worldly life.

Explanation of the Verse:

After the disbelievers have been cast into the Fire and have endured its severe torment, they are addressed with a humiliating and reproachful question: "Where are those partners you used to associate with Allah in worship?" This is not a genuine inquiry for information, but rather a scathing rebuke designed to expose their utter helplessness and the futility of their former beliefs. They are being told, in essence: "Call upon those deities you once revered and relied upon—let them come to your aid now, if they truly possess any power!"

This moment is one of profound disgrace. In the worldly life, these polytheists boasted about their idols, defended them passionately, and even fought for them. They believed these false gods could intercede for them, bring them closer to Allah, or grant them victory. Yet, on this Day, when they need help the most, those very idols are nowhere to be found. The silence of their false gods is deafening, and the emptiness of their former devotion becomes painfully clear.

The verse serves as a powerful reminder that every object of worship other than Allah—whether it be idols, statues, saints, wealth, power, or personal desires—will utterly fail its worshippers at the moment of greatest need. No matter how much devotion was poured into them, they cannot provide even the slightest relief from the punishment of Allah. This is the ultimate disappointment: to realize, at the very point of desperation, that everything you relied upon was nothing but an illusion.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, let this scene from the Hereafter awaken your heart today. The question posed to those in the Fire is not merely for them—it is a lesson for all of humanity. Ask yourself: What do I truly worship in my daily life? Is my heart devoted solely to Allah, or have I allowed other things to occupy His rightful place? The One who created you, sustains you, and hears your every prayer is the only One worthy of your complete submission. He is always near, always responsive, and His help is never far from those who sincerely call upon Him.

Do not wait until the Day when such a question is asked of you in regret. Turn to Allah now, purify your worship, and place your full trust in Him alone. For He is the One who says: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (Quran 40:60). There is no greater honor than being a servant of Allah, and no greater security than relying on the Lord of all worlds. Embrace this truth today, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next.

Other than Allah?" They will say, "They have departed from us; rather, we did not used to invoke previously anything." Thus does Allah put astray the disbelievers.
